Interesting Morecambe FC Facts

Interesting Morecambe FC Facts

Postby TK-Owl » Sat Aug 19, 2017 1:17 pm

Hello all!

I host a weekly football podcast covering the Premier League & the EFL and each week we feature a team and give a little run down of some facts about the club and chat about their result.

If you have anything that you think the rest of the football world should know about your club let me know and I'll use as much as I can.

Good luck with Swindon this afternoon!

Morecambe FC has never been relegated in its history, but are the bookies favourites for the drop most seasons.... the fact that Morecambe have spent most of that history playing in divisions that you can't be relegated from is irrelevant.

The Shrimps were involved in the last FA Cup tie to go to a third replay (vs Lancaster City).

Keisuke (Kenny) Takano became the first Japanese player to score in the FA Cup when he netted for Morecambe vs Emley during a 3-3 draw back in 1997. We were a part-time outfit at the time - he was a foreign exchange student at Lancaster University.

We have the best pies in football - "fact" (Rafa Benitez).

Back in the mid 70s the craze of 'streaking' began; in March 1974 Morecambe were playing away at Bedford in the quarter finals of the F.A.Trophy and the first recorded streak in Britain took place that afternoon on the pitch, to the bewilderment of everyone there.

While never being relegated in 97 years we've also never been promoted as League winners either. The last time we won a league title was exactly 50 years ago, however there was no automatic promotion to anywhere to be had.

Former player Ryan-Zico Black played at the Maracana Stadium in Brazil after Zico invited him to play alsongside Romario, Leonardo and a host of famous players in his charity match after hearing how he got his name. After exchanging passes with Chelsea's Lucas Piazion, he scored.

One of Morecambe's favourite teams to play is Wolves. The clubs have met three times and Morecambe won them all with a 9-2 goal aggregate. A near full strength Premiership side featuring Paul Ince, Oleg Luzhny, Dean Sturridge, Dennis Irwin and Colin Cameron got thrashed 6-1 in a pre-season friendly; then in the club's first season in the Football League they beat them 3-1 at Molineux in the League Cup; and then at home 1-0 in the same competition.

I'm confused...
Was it a two legged cup tie or did we play the League Cup twice in the same season? 8-) 8-) 8-)
