Wolves O/T

Wolves O/T

Postby Aspers » Sat Dec 29, 2018 9:24 pm

With the 3pm kick off, being being in such vast contrast to Australian Eastern Standard time,
I find myself, waking up with usually 10 mins to go until full time.
A good hard earned point, although my botty twitched when the
U’s hit the post, however, this post isn’t about today’s game.
She who must and I were discussing the football results, as is her want, she complained
about what some may call a pedantic matter.
I pondered her statement for some 8 seconds, before my reply of
“they just do”. As you can imagine, my answer was not accepted.
A very intelligent ( and may I say, beautiful) lady, she asked me why Wolverhampton Wanderers were not
called Wolverhampton, on the football result page?. Why Wolves, her point being Crystal Palace
has more letters then Wolverhampton etc.etc. She is bothered by the inconsistency of the BBC, (something us pommies take for granted).
Being a trifle pedantic myself, I commenced researching football names.
I think she may have a point. I couldn’t find any other team in any other league
referred to by their nickname. Abbreviations ie Nottm Forest are
acceptable.
Sleep well my loves, any acceptable answers would help.

Dunno but Blackburn couldn't be listed by their nickname with kids watching.

Surely "Wolve...s" is an abbreviation of "Wolve...rhampton"?
Notts County are only ever abbreviated while Nottingham Forest should never be.

Simple answer is, don't let her have a TV in the kitchen, then these types of questions won't come up.

So how did that work out then?

I assume Mrs F doesn't read SVs Keith. Otherwise that's dangerous talk.

Too right!

I'm neither brave nor stupid! I'm only daring to say it about Mrs Aspers on the basis that she's half a planet away!

Introduce her to the quirks of Scottish football club names as a diversionary tactic.
