I know it's a horrible thing to consider, but had that goal NOT gone in, and we'd lost, do you think, in the following 2 seasons, we'd have made it into the FL?

Arguably we should have gone up earlier than we did.

Incidentally, has anyone seen where York are lying in the BSP this evening, after a defeat by Northwich Victoria?

That's one of the reasons footballs so fascinating. Just watching the ebb and flow of different clubs fortunes over a protracted period. It does look as though York could plummet yet again which is hard to believe really. If they'd beaten us in that play off semi then it could well have been them in the FL and us still in non-league! Fate is really that fickle. Still hard to believe that a club of their stature can be so close to the drop. I can't think of any other clubs of a similar stature to York dropping through the leagues to Conf North level other than perhaps Scarborough who suffered massive financial problems and weren't as big as York used to be anyway.

...if Robbie Talbot had burried that sitter against the Daggers in 2003 we could have been an established league team etc etc

Halifax Town?

Yes, of course, forgot about them! Maybe not quite as big as York were, but a league club for many years non the less.

Scarborourgh & that on-loan goal keeper? If they'd stayed in the league would they have suffered the demise that followed or would they simply have postponed the inevitable?

Be thankful of a well run club!

Hey Wild Bill, don't forget if Talbot had scored or if we had won the penalty shoot out in 2003 we would still have had a tricky little encounter against Doncaster in the play of final.IMO we weren't quite ready for the step up in 2003. And we wouldn't have beaten Doncaster as the final wasn't at Wembley!! :D
Talking of Halifax and how things can change quickly in football, in 2006 they were in the play off final versus Hereford and were leading 2-1 at one stage. They were that close to returning to the FL. Now look where they are :(

Just think, if Robbie Talbot hadn't missed that sitter we'd be a midtable championship side by now playing in a 15,000 seater stadium  .........but in terms of gaining our league status for the first time in the clubs history, I'm glad we did it at Wembley!
