Carlos Mendes-Gomes

The build up to our second goal by Cole was the result of yet another incisive Carlos through ball very similar to the through ball he supplied on Tuesday that resulted in the back heel by Slew resulting in yet another Cole goal.

Carlos's value must be increasing significantly with every game and I just hope that as and when he moves on (as he surely will) that we get a true market value for him rather than peanuts or even worse 'sod all' due to his current deal expiring this summer and being able to move on for nowt..... :?: :?: :?:

Both Exeter and Crawley have received good money for one of their players of late; let's hope that we can also benefit possibly towards the £1million mark for him... :?: :?: :?:

Derek's spoken confidently about the situation, so I'd hope we do have an extension we can trigger for him. Given what we've seen other players go for, we should be expecting above £1m for him in my opinion. Top scorer for us as well as a fantastic creator of goals.

Carlos is playing above league 2 level now. He is a genuine match winner, really influences games now. He must be in demand.

If the club have negotiated an option of an extra year they have done superbly but I do think it was with the understanding he will move on in the summer.

He can't "move on for nowt" fortunately, due to his age. Now whether he'd move for 'market value' or even a 'fair price' would be another discussion.

So how did that work out then?

I thought we don't get anything if he, say, moves to a Scottish team like we got nothing for Aaran McGowan?

The ideal situation is that we activate his extension and he moves for a fee rather than losing him as a free agent with a tribunal or for nowt north of the border. Hearts were mentioned on Twitter at the end of the last window

That's a fair comment.
Regardless, I hope we get him signed up.

Great to see Carlos’s growing influence being spotted.

His 11 goals this season is a brilliant return, especially given how deep he plays for much of matches. Only one non-striker has scored more in a Football League season - Kevin Ellison with 15. 11 is more goals in a season than Lang, Barkhuizen, Howe, Baker or Blinkhorn managed. Only five more players have ever scored more in a FL season and he only needs 5 more to beat all of them bar Phil Jevons.

However, as Neil says, it’s the long range passes in open play that are just stunning to watch. He mentions the ball for Aaron for the third goal but arguably better in the same game was the pass with the outside of his boot that curled between two defenders and into the path of John O’Sullivan that was even better. There have been loads more including the pass to Adam Phillips against Colchester (?), that was utterly sublime in terms of pace, accuracy and skill.

I don’t know much about what’s going on behind the scenes with his contract (and others) but just enjoy him while we can because in terms of skill I’ve seen few better. Of course he’s raw in many ways but he’s such a talent.

As for £1 million, transfer fees are tumbling due to Covid. Don’t be surprised if it does happen that it’s not a lower number.

I'm with Posh - it didn't lead to a goal but that outside of the boot pass to find a tiny pocket in between the two CBs was incredible and probably the 'better' pass technically. Watched Chris Beech's post match interview who had the audacity to say it was a scuffed fluke, which is absolute nonsense - was an excellent and imaginative way of striking the ball to find the gap in the Carlisle defence. Weighted perfectly too.

I was recently having a conversation with someone who works in football recruitment as a consultant about CMG, and I'm not sure if that's exciting or worrying! He mentioned that another great asset to CMG's game is his defensive work rate, having been drilled by DA for over a year now! That'll be a really big plus point for clubs up the chain where pressing and work rate is such a huge part of basically every team. He makes the second most tackles per game in our squad, only behind Liam Gibson (I personally think Gibson is one of the most skilled tacklers I've seen in a good while).

I get the impression that there are certainly a lot of eyes on him. I just hope we've got a good situation with his contract as DA has said, and that when the time does inevitably come that we drive a high price for him.

At the end of last season and the start of this I didn't really buy into the hype about CMG. Decent player no doubt but a tad lightweight and too many fancy flicks giving up possession too easily. However over the course of this season he is rapidly developing into a superbly talented player. Some of the passes he has played in recent games have been sublime, carving open defences and resulting in goals. Chris Beech is having a laugh with his scuffed fluke comment. If De Bruyne had played that ball they'd have been raving about it on MOTD etc'. As we know he is also a great one touch finisher getting in dangerous positions and finding the net. But the icing on the cake is his defensive work. He does the hard yards in getting back and often nips in to take the ball off the opposition and set up counter attacks. What's also impressive is that he seems to have played virtually every minute of every game this season. Must be up there with Sam for minutes on the pitch. Worthy of a chance at a higher level, possibly with us but if not then we hopefully benefit financially from his move.

I liked his interview the other week when he was asked what he was going to do when he got home and he replied "play Fortnite". He just seems a very down to earth lad who is starting to make the most of his talent.
