Wouldn't have been my first choice, but we have to trust Derek and given budget constraints, better to have someone he knows and trusts to do the job he's given, rather than an untested youngster who may or may not turn good.

At least Jordan is older and has plenty of experience under his belt. What he lacks in ability is made up by experience and doing the job he's told to do.

After all, inexperience is probably what caused our relegation - didn't we have one of the youngest average aged squads in the EFL last year?

We need a balanced team, experience wise, and having Jordan and Songo'o playing together again may really help balance the youngsters to be more savvy and make the best of their talents.

Judging by his previous records, at numerous clubs, including his last time with us, he's unlikely to be the answer to our goal scoring. Who knows, perhaps if he comes in as our first choice striker, he may perform? Let's hope so.

Isn't he more of a wide player? Didn't exactly set the world on fire with us last time but seem to remember he had pace. Or was that just his driving? Haha

Hard to really judge this signing without seeing our full summer business.

If we get a few more decent first choice options in out wide and centrally, then I think Slew is a handy squad player who Derek trusts to act as a backup in a couple of different roles in the forward line.

But if we come to August 5th and Slew ends up being one of our starting XI choices, then it's a bit of a concern.

Could be an experienced hand to help the younger ones up front.

I trust DA to know JS's best position but he could be used purely as a target man to hold the ball up and bring others into the game.

Yes concerned about his lack of goals BUT DA has signed him I presume to do a specific job.

Still more to come in from the loans market.

A very underwhelming signing to say the least.

I’m sure he’s a nice lad and he can play a few positions but I can’t think of any other positive attributes he has as a footballer. I know he was signed by Blackburn Rovers for a million quid in his youth but would the guy ever have had a career as a professional footballer if it wasn’t for Derek signing him repeatedly?

Some are defending this signing on the basis that we’ve got no money and at least we know what we’re getting with Slew. Surely it would be more logical to sign a youngster from conference north level (or lower) who has even a slight chance of being good enough, rather than sign Jordan Slew who we know definitely isn’t good enough?

Bit of an awkward one this !

Our BoDs are all fans and watch every game as fans
but it must have raised an eyebrow at DA suggestion to offer him a contract knowing as
we fans do, he offered so little last time he was here
Guess you have to back your manager??

Exactly. While football is all about opinions, and the whole point of a forum is to express them, like it or not, he's now a Morecambe FC player, and as long as he gives 100% then he deserves our 100% support.

I remember a certain striker signing for us with a not too impressive record......proved a lot of people wrong......until they turned against him....due to not scoring enough.... :?: :?: :?:

Give JS the chance he deserves wearing our red shirt..... :) :) :)

I don't think people turned against him "due to not scoring enough". He didn't get the move he wanted last season so had a toddler tantrum, threw all his toys out of the pram, then stood in a corner and sulked whilst the rest of the team were playing football. He only pulled his finger out towards the end of the season so he could get away.

100% THIS We played the first half of the season with ten men, because Sulking-Stockton wanted away from the club, so didn't bother playing. If he'd not pulled his finger out towards the end of the season, when he realised offers weren't coming in, he'd have been lucky to get a National League signing.

If he'd given 100%, we'd have scored enough goals to not get relegated. He'd have then left the club as a hero. Going down wasn't entirely his fault, but he had a huge hand in us losing League One status. At least Jordan will work hard.

Still, he got his 'big move' in the end, eh?

Of course I’ll get behind Slew when he steps on the pitch but the thing is, we’ve already given him a chance - last time we signed him from the conference north - and he didn’t deliver.

I’m not convinced about the signings of Cammy Smith and the goalkeeper Moore either but I’ve no problem giving them a shot. It’s the signing of players who have been tried and failed before that perplexes me.

He was fine in his last spell with us. Didn't tear up any trees, but was a steady back-up player who could cover a couple of positions in the frontline. Was useful having someone with a physical presence to play down the middle when Stockton had knock, and put in a few decent shifts on the wing when covering for injuries or a bit of rotation.

At 30 he's not going to suddenly turn into a great L2 player and start bagging double digits. But he has proven to be a handy squad player under Derek previously. It'd be lovely if we could sign four Ash Hunter level players to compete for spots out wide, but that's just not feasible. We could do with a more marquee player to be pushing for a start out wide alongside Mayor, but as a squad player under Derek - Slew is a reasonable option.

At least Slew is/was a lot better than Wes McDonald! He may not set the World on fire, but he's a steady, competent, player who knows Derek's system and will do exactly what Derek wants him to do. No, he's not going to bag double digit goals, may not get more than 1 or 2, but he has the potential to help others score and also track back to do a half decent job in defending. At least he's unlike to do more harm than good, which is something you can't say for some of Robbo's signings.

I'm very surprised Jordan Slew has been released from a conference National side where he could not command regular football, yet lands a deal back in the football league with us. I get that Derek might be able to get more out of him than others, but it still strikes me as a big of a leap of faith/Jordan must have some incriminating photos of Derek and Tunnock biscuits ;) . Obviously our squad seriously lacks goals on paper; and putting the ball in the back of the net is something Jordan has struggled with throughout his career - so he doesn't help us in this area.

I actually think the opposite; Jordan was/is very competent out of possession - I think that's what Derek really likes about him; can hold a shape and play a couple of positions so he trusts him and offers some flexibility. When he came here initially, people were expecting a pacey forward that can run past people, an attribute he seemingly had at the start of his career that prompted Blackburn to part with £1million - but we are yet to see that. Seemingly he was with us this time round to improve his fitness, but Derek liked what he saw and has offered him a deal.

I read somewhere that Accrington historically are not busy in the market right up until the start of the season; they have targets that are invariably out of their price-range initially - but as the season approaches players that have not got themselves fixed with clubs drop wage expectations and Stanley step-in. Wouldn't like to think we are missing out on similar opportunities because of the squad we have assembled to date - i.e. are any of these signings in demand? No disrespect to Jordan, but I can't see him having many offers to consider. Appreciate that Stanley have more of a long-term approach than we seemed to have had in recent seasons about contract length (which is a real problem IMO), and hence every season seems to be a complete squad overhaul.... but I just don't really understand some of the signings to date; looks like we could be heavily reliant upon loanees again.

Agree with the above on that point about rushing to sign Jordan up. Sure he could be useful to make up the numbers but I doubt he was in demand at all, we could have given him a few trial games and signed him up nearer the end of the window if no better options.
