Respect for Luton

As my learned friend Big Red Dog has said on another thread we have got to be a bit sensitive to Luton Town in their fight to stay up. I'm not suggesting our team lays down and lets them win but on the other hand us supporters must not take the Michael out of them.

All this points deduction is very well but it's the real and genuine fans that suffer and we would be gutted if it ever happened to us.

I personally think Luton have done very well to amass the points they have and on the whole their fans have taken the situation on the chin. They seem to travel away in big numbers but I think this will be their longest trip apart from perhaps Darlington so we should give them a warm Morecambe welcome.

As for us making the play off's - well on the big league weekend on Sky they dont really give us a hope and Peter Taylor at the Daggers v Brentford (abandoned game) said we have done well but wont make the play off's - let's attempt to prove them all wrong!! However I will be cheering on Wycombe on Saturday lunch when they take on Shreswbury on the Sky game.

Apart from the occasional bit of genuinely humorous and original banter I NEVER see what's to be gained by having a go at opposition fans at our level. It just makes us sound thick IMO.

We're all just fans supporting our own team.

oh I don't know about that one! I've always taken that as being an ironic chant, usually based upon the fact that the 'town' we are singing it to are generally bigger than Morecambe in the first place!

Back to the original topic, I would agree that while I am sure they dont want our pity, it would be totally out of order to rub anyone's nose in a sorry situation. Great call Sgt Major.

While mathematically still possible to stay up, I would say that a wounded beast is a dangerous one. Add the points they have to the deduction and they are only 3 points different to us. Big game for both clubs on Saturday.

I am sure we will give them respect.

Are Luton supporters, in truth particularly bothered about what "entertainment" Saturday brings?

Do Luton have as much affection for Eric?

Having never been to Luton for any reason, nor in truth have i any intention, then why should we offer them a higher level of respect than, Bournemouth, or Rotherham for example.

Seems somewhat pointless to put on a carnival for a club in the shit!

Sorry if i do sound selfish, but i couldn't give a monkeys about these clubs who end up in admin, thats their own fault....i just hope we don't follow suit when we move grounds, as seems to be the norm with a lot of clubs over the last 3-4 yrs!

Whatever mess the club got itself into isn't the point. It's about respecting a set of fans who have braved the season but now face the reality of dropping to the Conference.

Both Morecambe and Luton have one thing in common - the fact that Eric Morecambe was born in Morecambe and then when he became famous he went live near Luton andtook them on as his adopted club. His son, Gary has great links with both towns and will be present at the game.

I thank the lord that Morecambe have yet to get an attutude that allows us not to give a toss about teams in turmoil - it's the fans that are the losers and let's face it we are all fans - there is no history between us and Luton and we just want to make their fans feel welcome in what must be a traumatic time for them. I personally feel for Chester fans, the ones Ive met in the York have been great - it's their Chairman that needs a good sorting out.

I'm probably getting soppy in my old age, but because of the Eric link I look on Luton as a sort of sister club, and like my own family members we may not get on all the time but I wouldn't want to wish her any harm.

I think I'm right in my belief (please correct me if I'm wrong) that the set of directors that accrued/created their massive points deduction aren't even at the club anymore. so the new directors who will be trying their best and as usual the hard suffering fans end up paying the ultimate price. That's why, amongst many other reasons, we should be extending the hand of friendship on saturday not the chants of derision.

I, like many others, will remember Luton winning the league cup, I think in the days when it was the littlewoods cup if I remember rightly. I was also there the day they turned upto anfield in the 1982-83 season having just been promoted and got a 3-3 draw. I was, along with many fans, shocked gutted and impressed by their football. I got over it by getting Kenny Dalglish's autograph on the way home on the train. So no harm done really.

Morecambe is our team, and Luton is theirs. There will and should be no quarter asked nor given on the field of play. But off it we are noble in defeat and magnanimous in victory, that's what makes us who we are and no game of football should ever change that.

Some great points made in this thread. I wish Luton the best, except for the 90 minutes that we meet. If they can take heart from anything, it is the experience of Doncaster and how a period in non-league allowed them to re-group and come back stronger.

Yes it was the previous directors. On our trip to Luton before Xmas our fans were particularly appreciative of the free mince pies at half time - especially Geoff!

Maybe we should reciprocate and give their fans pies/Easter eggs as long as the above is not handing them out
