I actually think that’s the wrong way to look at it.

Tens of thousands of kids are in academies and a lot of them are in the Premiership and Championship sides in the North West. Yet at League 2 level we’re the best there is in the North West, better than Accy and Fleetwood. I think we’re in a perfect position to capture the best castoffs from the top clubs and pick up the gems from the independent coaching academies. We can make a real niche for ourselves.

It’s noticeable that when the Academy went up a grade the first thing it did was hoover up all the talent from the immediate area. Some teams even folded because they took so many players. However, many of them have now gone back to their original teams and they’ve been back-filled by dropouts from Manchester City and loads of other clubs. Families are driving their kids 50 miles each way three times a week because of the Academy here.

P.S. Not all local lads have gone back. One of ours from Bowerham Juniors has scored 73 goals for Morecambe this season; scored 7 in an 8-6 win over Everton; and 3 in a 4-3 win over Man City, where he claims he nutmegged Rooney’s son three times because Wayne was allowed to watch but his Dad wasn’t.

He wasn't. We sold him to them. I think we got about £5k for him and within 18 months Colchester paid about £180k for him.

Haha! Mary the font of football knowledge said we support Morecambe and S.M. got us in the League, Keith said he used to play for Morecambe so she didnt believe him, lollol. Course i said Perks used to play for Rochdale which was soon followed by a big grin - yeah i bought him for 'nothing' and made a killing.
