Denis Law couldn't make it due to family bereavement, but made one fan really happy by sending him a signed old fashioned shirt - he is somewhat over the moon!. Malcolm McDonald and Pat Crerand were great stand ins and had some brilliant stories to tell.

Can't say I'm really that bothered that this has gone to Blackpool. The comedy due could've had a statue erected of them anywhere, but Blackpool is as good as anywhere given they've probably performed there as a duo on numerous occasions. We already have a statue of Eric, whilst I believe there is also a statue of Earnie Wise in his hometown.

It would be nice for the council to commemorate Thora Hird.

The 'John McGuinness Way' would've won by a mile had it been considered, and it tied into the ports connection with the TT.

Apparently, County were against any living person receiving the honour of having it named after them. And also thought that bikers would see it as a challenge and try and race down it if it was named after McPint. Both of which are varying degrees of Bollocks in my opinion.

So working on that premise, dead local celebrity, how about "Thora Hirds's Passage"?

Imagine the traffic reports on the radio, "We've just been up Thora Hirds passage and its all clear".

Back in about 1984 ish I was dancing for the BBC, we were rehearsing at Shepherds Bush studios for a filming. I was having lunch in the canteen and there was Thora, she was sat with a couple of people and and I went over and introduced myself. We had a lovely chat about Morecambe, I told her I started in amateur theatre for Morecambe Warblers as did she but I think they had another name then. I saw her a couple of times after that and she always referred to us as Sand grown uns lol.

What if the local refuse disposal operatives (Binmen in my day) lost the contents of their truck on the said road.

The radio may say, In other news the council refuse disposal operatives have lost their load all over etc

With regard to John McGuinness , if it had been named after him how many people from outside of this area other than motor cycle enthusiasts would have heard of him.

By the same token, I drive down Tom Benson Way in Fulwood every working day and have no idea who he was/is...!!

Barrow AFC re-named the road (with their Council help of course) their Holker Street ground stands on as Wilkie Road in honour of their late great manager, Ray Wilkie.

As Gone_Shrimping mentioned, only someone local people would know about (unless it's just me being completely ignorant in not knowing who Tom Benson was )

Similar to Barbara Castle Way in Blackburn which I drove down last weekend although when the present Mrs Seasider asked me who she was, I knew!!

Surely that's the point, you can honour your local heroes by naming a road or some civic building after them.
I didn't know the blokes name whom they did put forward to name the THP (Thora Hirds Passage!!) after but apparently he was a First World War hero, so fair enough. But nobody here knew who he was.
But Tom Benson I didn't know about and I work in Preston, I feel educated now!!!

With two sailings from the Isle of Man every day, I suspect a few from outside the area!

At the time I thought it should be "The John McGuinness Highway". Closed to normal traffic the weekend before the TT's, Camps set up for the bikers to use and let them have free run of the road. Also a JM statue with him on top step of podium and 2nd and 3rd empty for photo's. I'm not a fan or biker but think it would do more for the area than "The Bay Gateway".
