For those who haven't read our Manager's comments in the Visitor about working on our defensive shape:
http://www.thevisitor.co.uk/sport/morec ... -1-8023775Looks to me as though the same old problems from last season still prevail...

For everyone's sanity let's get behind the team this season as a whole. Three interesting opening league games to ENJOY and let's see what happens. We can stay up but everyone needs to pull together at the club as part of the recent probs are because we've become a bit fragmented. Every game's (cliché alert) a cup final for us this season and the fans can play their part.

I know it was only a friendly but CC has a point.
Last season the two full backs would move in when the opposition attacked, giving us a back four all inside the width of our penalty area.Beeley in particular would then dash across to the winger and dive in,invariably missing the tackle. Full backs mark wide men, its their job, and we fail to do it on an all too regular basis.............and seeing as we also can't defend crosses its a recipe for disaster.
Still we have a couple more weeks and some more games to master this basic skill:
DON'T FOLLOW THE BALL FOLLOW YOUR MAN!
Come on Jinbo, sort them out; eliminate this basic error and we could have a really good season.

We lost 0-2 away at Lancs Contabulary pre season in '94 and then won promotion to the Conference.
It's pre season.

Early days, but pin this on the dressing room wall in the meantime:
"Went behind early on in the only real clear cut chance for Morecambe first half and then dominated possession for the rest of the half, couldn't get the final ball right to create too much real and made a mess of the only realy chance we did get and were often frustrated by a really cynical Morecambe side (ridiculous for the higher placed team to play sucha way in a pre-season game disrupting play and being allowed to do so by some poor refereeing,
Second half we had clearly become wise to their tactics and were prepared to give as good as we got to stop them from getting away with it constantly and got an equaliser pretty much straight away, corner came in and Denton won the first header for Koslyo to head in from close range and took the lead shortly after with an excellently taken finish from J-Mac after the ball landed to him at the far post, sort of chance that last season he wouldn't have looked confident taking, Morecambe got an immediate equaliser after a goal mouth scramble but we didn't let that stop our second half charge with Garner scoring after more dire Morecambe defending at a corner, was pleased with the way we attacked corners for our goals from them but the Morecambe defending from those plus other corners we got chances from was horrific, 4th was a bizarre goal from Denton after a bit of pin ball which I'm still not entirely sure what happened, impressed with his play so far this pre-season and now nice for him to be on the score sheet then the final two were excellently taken by Peniket, the first being a cracking volley from a cross on the right and the second being a well placed finish from distance
Morecambe were dire and should be very concerned if thats a real reflection of their side but shouldn't take anything away from us, we were the best team all game but the way we clearly saw where we were being nullified at half time and came out all guns blazing in the second half was particularly impressive"http://www.theshaymen.net/ipb/index.php ... ay/&page=3

After the Burnely match we were world beaters, and now we're back to being relegation fodder.
People's knees need to stop jerking all over the place. It was too soon to say we'd turned the corner, and one bad match doesn't mean there won't be improvements from last season.

Different team but highlights the lack of depth in the squad.

Defending corners is down to coaching, it was a problem for all of last season, Its not a one off.

And not marking the opposition's wide players is also a coaching issue that wasn't dealt with last year either, and by the looks of yesterday's highlights remains a problem. Our L/B and R/B play too centrally and give the opposition's wide players too much freedom.

I didn't say it was a one-off. I'm just bemused that the same people who were proclaiming world beaters and how much we'd progressed after Tuesday night are now telling us nothing has changed. Same old shrimpsvoices.
In an ideal world, yesterday wouldn't have happened. However, to make such proclamations that no progress has been made, especially when regurgitating the reports of people who were there rather than forming any opinion of their own, is premature.

It's a friendly it means nothing.
Lots of subs, experimental formations, players returning, players wanting to avoid getting injured etc etc

Didnt, Man Utd lose 4-1 the other night??.
They'll probably win the prem this year.
As for us, League 1 here we come !

Nobody points a gun at anyone's head to make them read any threads so there is no need for any personal abuse.

Ouch, touchy. Let's just wait until the season proper, see how we perform in competitive games. From past experience the friendlies mean next to nothing, as they have tended to be so unrepresentative of the eventual league performance that we've stopped going. It's too early to start getting either too excited or too concerned.

I would think Jim, gave the players a real bollocking after that match, but i would expect a reaction from the players in training and a better performance against PNE. Getting hammered like that should be a big learning curve ,but thats why we have friendlies. From what i saw in the previous matches we are not too far away, but lets wait and see which players sign on first before we start moaning.

We kept leaking goals last season, but it wasn't a learning curve at all, we all kept expecting a response, but it never came. On Saturday it looked like the same defending problems with different players and that's a worry!

It's concern to you. It means nothing to me. No points on offer. We beat Wolves 6-0 in pre season but we didn't score six again!! If you don't experiment in friendlies what's the point??
