Although, of course, had it been a competitive game he'd have been booked and the kick retaken: "A player using a deliberate trick to circumvent the Law while he is taking a free kick, is cautioned for unsporting behaviour and shown the yellow card. The free kick is retaken."

I remember playing one Sunday for the Supporters team on a windy astro turf Salt Ayre against Oscars Bar.
Tym Stewart was holding the ball to stop it running away as I ran up to take the penalty, he pulled the ball away just as I went to strike the ball leaving me to kick thin air and fall over.
The ref booked us both and awarded them a free kick.

...correctly. I think this is the relevant section of the Laws of the Game:

Law 12 Fouls and misconduct.

9 (a) A player (or players) may be cautioned and a free-kick awarded to the opposing team if, in the opinion of the referee, said player(s) has (have) been acting like daft twats.

I should definitely NOT have been booked for missing the ball. :x
I once had a goal ruled out for shouting " leave it" as I struck the ball.. now that's outrageous!

You share this with more exalted company, halftimeresults, as Bobby Charlton had a goal disallowed in the 1972 F.A.Cup Quarter Final at Old Trafford v. Stoke. It was 1-1, he shouted "leave it" and the goal was disallowed. United then lost the replay at Stoke.

Bit unfair on Hodgy!   Also, can the ref give a free kick in the opposite direction if the ball isn't in play?

*f'ckin* internet dropped again, so Player's gone off again.

Outrageous that the goal was ruled out or outrageous that you scored a goal, Hodgie?

Anyone who plays football at any competitive level knows you cannot shout, ''leave it '' , hence the phrase ''put a name on it'', ie. if you shouted ''Hodgies ball '' ,that would be fine.

Show me where in the rules it says that you cannot shout "leave it"
EDIT- after doing research, I 100% should not have had my goal ruled out

They aren't called rules, they are called laws, and its covered in ''LAW 12'', in the misconduct bit, it has been debated at length for years in refs forums, you can't shout ''my ball'' or ''mine'',either.

An instruction to a fellow team mate is not an offence

I'd presume that a defender was also going for the ball? They wouldn't have known if you were their teammate calling for them to leave it. Hence the 'put a name on it' otherwise 'ungentlemanly conduct'. You cheaterer!

The ref has to be 100 % sure that I'm trying to con the defender and in this case I wasn't so the goal stands :(

Well, according to the laws of the game, the referee's decision is final. And he disagreed with your assertion that "the goal stands"...

How long ago was this? Don't you think you should let it go?
