Ok, so I get an email from PayPal saying I have paid £87-04 on Facebook Inc for some game called FarmVille
It says if I have not authorised this payment then click on this link

1. I don't have a PayPal or Facebook Inc account
2. I dont buy anything on line - ever
3. I've never heard of a game called FarmVille
4. I don't feel like clicking on the link

Help !

Suggest you ring your bank (as a matter of urgency) and tell them NOT to pay out any demand from PayPal and confirm that in writing.

I use PayPal on a regular basis for buying photograpic stuff and whenever there has been a problem they are quick to get it sorted. But as a first resort get in touch with your Bank after all it is they who PayPal would go to to get the money.

Ignore it. It's a well known scam attempt. If you have no PayPal account then they can't scam you for your details.
It's a bit like getting an email from a bank requesting your account details despite the fact that you don't have an account with them

I haven't clicked on the link but have e-mailed a reply saying that I don't have an account with either PayPal or Facebook Inc and to send further details about this so I can inform the Police

I don't have any account details on line so hopefully no-one had been dipping !
I'll contact the Bank as well

Delete it and forget about it. Millions of email addresses will have been sent exactly the same thing today. Don't bother wasting your own time ringing your bank as it really has nothing to do with them.

Scammers send them out talking about things like Facebook and Paypal because a lot of people use those websites. I keep getting ones saying there is a problem with my Netflix payment. I don't have Netflix and the email isn't from Netflix. No legit company would contact you in that way.

If you don't have either account then it's obviously a scam. If you had either or both accounts, still never ever click a link in an email. Login as you would do normally and check if there's a message waiting for you. You can check further by just leaving the mouse over the link, most email clients will pop up the actual address it would take you to if you were to click it. They usually use domains similar to paypal or facebook but you can see they are fake.

Never ever reply to them, all you have done is confirm they have the email address of a real person which they will sell to other scammers. Action Fraud is an excellent police advice service;

I have had these emails as well don't worry just ignore them & report them as phishing scam.

And, as a guide line, Paypal when they DO email, will ALWAYS address you by your full name.

For example,

"Dear John Smith" etc etc.

Scammers always start with "Dear Paypal Customer" or similar.

Oh dear. Expect the number of these emails to grow now that you confirmed it is a 'live' email and, without intending to be rude, shown that you are at least *slightly* taken in by them. I guess you do have an HSBC, Barclays, Yorkshire, Santander or Lloyds TSB account? They are getting better at looking 'right'.

If you have on-line banking, if you get anything like this, NEVER respond and NEVER, EVER, EVER follow the links. Just log on to your account and check then.

As an aside, if you get a phone call from a 'bank', and you say you are going to phone them back yourself, use a different phone. Most people would use a landline, as it will be an 0800 or similar number. If the scammers don't hang up, the line doesn't clear, so you go back to them. They just play a 'dial tone', so you think you are dialling someone else.
