We offered him a deal but because of the rules regarding players going cross border we will receive nothing.

No fee for him is bloody annoying but that's the rules for cross border transfers for players out of contract.
Aaron has come on leaps and bounds since his days in the Academy but it's time to move on for both club and player. Not too concerned about his loss, just a pity we didn't feel able to offer the loanee from Donny Rovers Michell Lund a further loan deal or even a full time contract (now that Donny have transfer listed him) because for me he impressed when given some game time. However I'm sure JB will find a more than adequate replacement. I'd be more concerned about Steven Old leaving to be honest, but at least we've got Mr Lavelle signed up; a player with huge potential and hopefully a big pay day when some Premiership club comes knocking.

Gutted that he's leaving. For me the best player last season, most improved and possibly one of the best graduates of our academy. The perils of not getting early contracts for the best players! Can't believe Roche, Old, Fleming, Kenyon and McGowan have seen their contracts run down. When will we learn to get our best players on more than one year?

I just hope this isn't a sign of things to come. At the moment we only have 4 of the final match day squad signed up for next season, plus the two early additions from the reserves.

Absolutely gutted about the loophole, genuinely didn't realise that was a possibility. I always thought it was down to the rules applicable in the current location of the player.

If we didn't have enough money to encourage him to stay we may well lose others.

I thought Accrington got something although not much when they lost Windass and Crookes to Rangers.

He was offered a deal. For al we know might have been last summer, Christmas, Yesterday. You can't force a player to sign it.

Agree it’s sad that he’s leaving. Loves the club and puts his body on the line every time he plays. Also got huge potential to develop much further.

Don’t agree though on signing lots of players to new contracts. We’d be making commitments to players for money we may not have and based on a league we may not be in. If Aaron or Alex had moved to an English club we’d have got money. If we were a settled side with money in the bank it would have been easier but then we’d have been paying them more.

Sounds like all the out of contract players are having a good look round with noone committing early apart from Barry, can't blame though after the uncertainty of not been paid.

Does it mean though the only ones that will Re sign are only doing it because they couldn't find a move.

If you’re talking about ALEX Kenyon, he’s 25 now :o , turning 26 this year so we wouldnt even get compensation for him as it is only for under-24s... Lets just hope we can wrap those guys up to new deals! But completely agree about the money, because if Old had turned out to be crap, we’d have been stuck with an ever-aging centre back who we couldn’t have offloaded.

Is there really any point in having the academy?

I’d say we’ve lost our best player :(

Yes we should have got him tied down on a longer deal but we’ve ended up with Oliver and Campbell tied up for next season so it works both ways...

Exeter have done pretty well out of their academy players.

Considering the news about Aaron and Jim's comment 'we're not a club that can throw money around'.....can we assume that we'll have a similar budget to last year and any hope that the new owners will invest in the team will be false?

Not sure whether there has ever been a statement that the new owners would invest in the team.

A fair point that I've been mulling over. So far since joining the Football League, I can only see that we have had 4 graduates from the academy play 30+ games for us, and all of them moved on for nothing: Thommo (40), Garry Hunter (168), Jo Mwasile (30) and AJ (102). Not knowing the level of investment from the club itself (as opposed to external funding from the EFL etc), it's hard to know whether that's a good return.

Exeter are less likely to have their players poached across the Scottish border...

I get what people are saying in regards to offering contracts, but again the worrying bit for me is that our best players have moved on for nothing. Were the likes of Old, McGowan and Kenyon playing well in the first few months of the season? Absolutely. Yet players like Oliver and Campbell are tied up for next season...
