Fleetwood today

Postby redrobo » Sat Jul 28, 2018 10:36 am

Really looking forward to this final pre season game v old rivals and friends from Fleetwood. Will be of particular interest for me to see if we adopt our attacking play to maximise the heading ability of new signing Oswell who scored the majority of his goals from crosses into the box whilst at Stockport. It's some time since we really had an aerial threat up front who is proven at scoring with their head. A lot will depend on the quality of crosses into the box and I think that Oates will be a significant contributor in that area.Just a pity that the weather could have a detrimental affect on both the game and attendance.

More to the point D/H, is did the game even take place today??? Nothing on MFC website and nothing on SV's.

I trust that things will be a little more lively when the season actually starts!!!

According to www.fleetwoodtownfc.com 1-3

No scorers or details though. Did anyone go to the game?

Went to the match today. Lost 3-1, but we played some decent football at times. In the first half I thought Campbell and Fleming played quite well - Flem scored with a great shot. Second half - loads of substitutions - I thought Jagne and Mendes-Gomes both looked quick and skillful and should do well for us.

Fleetwood looked horrible. With the likes of Grant and Evans in the side, they bullied us from start to finish. On todays showing, Jim is sticking with his 3 forwards and 3 midfielders. We look really weak in the middle with Flemmo and Wildig playing behind Campbell. Nothing really happened for us until Mandeville, Jagne and Gomes came on.

A lot of long ball to Oliver as last year which just doesn't work , even if he wins the ball he doesn't know what to do with it . Banjo and barn door are two words that cone to mind , cracking goal by Flemmo and MOTM .

Negative posts started before the league games :( Surely we need to wait a bit.

Not negative just honest , Oliver just floats around like a lost soul maybe we need someone to play along side him but until then he shouldn't be in the starting 11

It’s only pre- season, but we played some good football today. Only slight issue I had was Campbell, I’m not sure what he brings to the team.

We played better stuff when Oliver went off. The temptation to hoof it isn't there and the new lads seemed comfortable with the ball at their feet. For the first 70mins, it just felt like last season and that we haven't learnt from the mistakes.

We so badly need a midfield dynamo. Fleetwood took the ball off us before we could string 3 passes together but we hardly ever retrieve the ball high up or quickly.

It wasnt till the last 15 minutes that it got exciting, even involved Joey Barton and Co getting involved with stuff and his missing trousers .
Breath of fresh air when Jagne and Gomez came on. Please start one of these guys and Oswell
Enjoy yourself.... It is later than you think

As someone commented on the way out, it was a case ' of the same old same old' with little imagination. As last season Oliver was poor and for me the sooner he goes out on loan the better. Fleming worked hard and both Cranston and Mills as did Mandervill impressed but we missed Sam in partnership with Old. The only bit of excitement was when the couple of new youngsters came on but I suspect that JB will not gamble on them next Saturday. Fleetwood will without doubt get a reputation for their no compromise style of play and it wouldn't surprise me if they ended up with a record number of bookings and dismissals. I just hope that the style of play we adopted today isn't the forerunner of what we can expect this season.

I actually thought the first 15/20 mins we played well and you couldn’t tell which was the League One side and which was the League 2 side.
Their keeper made a great save to keep out Wildig’s header but then same old story they go and score at the other end. To be fair to Oliver I thought he showed a few good touches early on but then our tactics reverted to long ball and it became too easy for them. Then he became isolated and his best work was defending at set pieces.
Thought that Lagne and Mendes looked good when they came on as several others have said.
I personally wouldn’t go with the starting 11 from today and think he should go 3 at the back if Lavelle is available alongside Kenyon and Old. I’m also not sure how we use Ellison either but know he will have his uses at some point.
Be brave Jim, go for it with some of the new lads on Saturday . No other team expects us to do anything so we’ve nothing to lose.

I just don't understand why we persevere with Vadaine Oliver. In my opinion he is not good enough to be playing league football. It's true with his height he wins headers but generally can't direct them accurately. On the ground he just looks clumsy and clueless. We must have better alternatives if we are to avoid the drama of last season.

I would like to see Jim start with Mendes-Gomes and Jagne or at least one of them as midfield suddenly looked very creative when they came on. I hope we can sign a centre back before the Crewe game as we looked very shaky in the air from dead-balls and their 2nd goal was shocking , a free header from 6 yards.

Maybe I have missed some announcement about this, but can anybody tell me what has happened to Sam Lavelle? Last season his partnership with Old grew to be pretty solid, and I hoped that they would be able to carry that forward this season.

Cheers G/S. Let's hope that all injuries are sorted ASAP so that we can start to see just what we have for the new season, and hopefully Jim can pick his best team and STICK WITH IT (injuries apart). Let's stop worrying about the opposition, and play to our strengths, leaving the opposition to worry about us - particularly at The Globe.
