Lowest attendance of the season....?

Last years attendances were dire approaching the back end of the season and I myself attended one game with a sub 900 crowd Colchester United iirc.

If resuts continue along there current trajectory do you think sub 1000 crowds could become a regular thing and if the writing is on the wall with regards our relegation how low do you thing they will go? I think around 700 is quite possible if we play a southern team with a minimul following on a week night.

Can't see Northampton travelling well given their poor start and disgruntled fan base.


Thinking about comeing myself and I have seen a win at The Globe in the 5 games since my revived interest in watching the club play live.

This game is big given the fact that anything other than a win will kill any optimism left in the tank!!

1,594 including 230 Cobblers. At last a half decent crowd who watched a great game that will go down in Shrimplore and followed by a Saturday home game for them to look forward to and hopefully bring a few mates along.

Could tell beforehand that there was a bigger crowd than normal (for an evening game) which is good too see, also boosted by a respectful Cobblers faithful who to be fair were fantastic, they were graceful in defeat, showed no aggression and did not antagonise the home crowd. There is no doubt that the style of football affects attendances and today's game will hopefully bring faces back, I myself work weekends but always try to attend evening games when possible.

Think Saturdays attendance may push or break the 2000 mark as Oldham will bring a few hundred.

It was announced at the man of the match presentation this evening that Oldham have sold 1600 tickets so far, so we should crack the 3000 mark!

The ones I can think of are Newcastle, Carlisle and Southend

Just guessing but Burnley in the league cup (first season at the Globe) and PNE the following season in the FL Trophy.


This season I can see Carlisle bringing a large following as usual regardless of their league position. Oldham will also travel well on Saturday (new territory and all that.) In addition to this I can see Bury, Tranmere and Lincoln bringing good away followings. Sunderland in the FL trophy could be an eye opener - 1000 of hours + whatever they bring which could be the high 100's. The rest of the clubs in the league will probably bring the standard league 2 followings of 50 (minimum) to 300. I can therefore only see the away standing being open on a handful of occasions.

Attendances were higher in the early years of our FL status because clubs bring good away support to new patches. It is quite interesting to note that generally as clubs travel up the non-leagues and into the FL attendances go down the more successful they become. More recently look at Tranmere Rovers. I remember following Morecambe in the late 90's when crowds in the early 1000's were the norm, now they are the norm in league 2. Christie Park was packed for FA Cup games against Ipswich and Cambridge because it was something new - a FL team coming to town. When you arrive in the FL you get used to it and of course, ticket prices go up.

I can think of many teams whose crowds have tapered off as they rise through the leagues: Of the top of my head Tranmere, FGR, Morecambe, Stevenage, Crawley, Fleetwood, Accrington, Mansfield, Yeovil, AFC Wimbledon, Bristol Rovers attendances now are not that much different to those in the non-leagues. Our near neighbours Accrington can barely muster over 2000 in league 2 which is staggering when you think what an immense season they had last year.


If we had a miracle promotion to League One do you think our average attendance would go up much more? For me it is only when you enter the Championship, with its plethora of ex-PL sides do average attendances really shoot up.

So, it wasn't just a fantastic day on the pitch, it's starting to look good in hospitality too. Also, was that a new sizing option for hot dogs I saw, i.e. a choice or large or small?

Yes , i looked on the club's ticket purchase website yesterday and the C hospitality looked well booked up.

If we get the predicted 3,000 ish gate on Saturday our average for the season will be around 2,100 although there aren't enough Oldhams to keep the average up.

So Potted Shrimp hugely underestimates the Northampton attendance and the Oldham one by a 1,000 even before the game kicks off.
