The board has been backed up to this point and I will be carrying out an update this afternoon... Hopefully painlessly!

Once updated, I'll delete this thread. You shouldn't see any changes but it is more secure.

Okay, three hours later and original backup reinstalled!

Read instructions three times.
Followed instructions exactly.
Broke forum.

Swore.

Tried again.

Reinstalled backup.

I need to check a few other settings so won't be having another go for a while now. Carry on!

So...... Is this a forum update or a massive bit of an update on our playing staff for the next season?

What the heck have you done? Broken non-www but got the proper domain working.

I'd cure this with a healthy dose of start-again medicine. Fresh install of latest software in another folder, call it whatever you want and make sure the proper domain works with it.

Nothing lost, this forum remains hanging off the Giraffe's neck if anyone wants to read the old stuff. Best time to do it is out of season.

Surely, according to your own obsessive rules Keith, this doesn't have much to do with MFC and has more of a "does anyone want to buy my second hand sofa" that my much maligned mate Neil R often gets told he needs to change to O/T.

My advice to your DNS issue would be to ask if you've done a search engine search for a solution. That's what I would do. Mr Google often knows, as do other search engine providers.

The DNS issue with w w w is quite clear, 2 different IP addresses but that's for arvixe to resolve.

What to do Keith? Start again.

That *should* mean people don't have to re-register etc? Or am I being too simplistic? As I still don't understand why the update didn't work, I'm beyond my skill level!

You were fine until you mentioned FTP database and files. The point of a new install is that it's the version you're trying to upgrade to. As soon as you copy the old stuff across, you're back exactly where you are now, except it probably won't work.

So, if I'm reading you right, if I navigate to shrimpsvoices.co.uk all is good, but if I navigate to giraffe.arvixe.com/~iomkeith/shrimpsvoices then I get an error message.

So what? Who cares? The most logical way of getting to the message board works properly. The most illogical way doesn't work. Does anyone actually get to the forum that way? (Apart from Marky No1).
