Morecambe 2 Rochdale 1 (Senior Cup)

I see there is a match this coming Wednesday night at The Globe, KO 7pm:

Morecambe v Rochdale in the "Senior Cup", £3 for adults.

This match doesn't seem to be mentioned on the OWS.

What is the "Senior Cup"? It seems to be Lancashire teams only.

With the first team playing Tuesday night, presumably the Wednesday macth will be fringe/reserve players? Maybe a chance to see Mendes-Gomes, Jagne, Oates, Leitch-Smith etc?

...and if you know, your history, it's enough to make your heart swell...

Lancashire Senior Cup is the oldest knock out competition in the world. Morecambe were the only non-League side to win it, beating a Burnley side that included at least two internationals at the time. Morecambe lost against Man City in the final in 1974 the week after the FA Trophy final at Wembley.

The competition then stopped being played until relatively recently (don't know when it was reconstructed & reformatted).

Hmm... unless there were a few winners missing, this may not be true! According to Wikipedia, the original winners was in 1879/80 with the FA Cup first being won in 1872.

We won it in 1968.

1975 to 1983 there wasn't a competition. Then again, 2000 to 2005 it didn't happen.

Blackburn Rovers have won it most often (18 times) with Man Utd second (15), Bolton, Burnley & Liverpool (12 wins each).

When we won it, it was a big deal!

Memories eh! That win against Burnley was my first ever game as an 8 year old and I'm now 60. Remember that game against City as well with a massive crowd following the Wembley win. They put a very strong team out, Joe Corrigan in goals for example and absolutely hammered us. Some crackpot felt the need to launch a dart onto the pitch at Corrigan which thankfully missed him. Thank God those days have gone.

In 1974 I think , and maybe an anorak could confirm that we beat a pretty strong Manchester United team in the semi final before losing 0-3 to Manchester City in the final.

I was an 8 year old at the Burnley game too, but I'm only fifty-ten!

The 1974 final came on the back of a run of 6 league matches in 10 days at the end of the season to catch up the back log due to our cup successes. City were a strong side, but I think we were also knackered!

Funnily enough, I was an eight year old at the Man City final!

Didn't the moron's dart stick in the post? I have a vague memory of seeing a photo of it.

The team is on the Morecambe FC official twitter.

Can't remember the full team but names I recall are Jagne , Mendes-Gomes , + the young midfielder signed from Wigan and the young striker signed from PNE.

Edit Morecambe 2 Rochdale 1

Joe Lynch with a penalty and Mendes-Gomes with a last minute winner.

Joe Lynch the young lad signed from Crewe was outstanding in midfield.

Reminded me very much of a younger Fleming without passing back... :D

Perhaps Jim should give Joe Lynch a go in midfield in the first team - it's an area where we seem to be lacking at the moment.

Even if Jim doesn't want to start him, he could be named as a sub and brought on for the last 30mins to see how he copes?
