Will become the first lady to referee in the EFL on Easter Monday when she refs Harrogate v Port Vale

Well done Rebecca and it's about time... Hopefully more ladies will follow her lead

We have had several female assistant referees and they have all been very good.

in some ways Female Ref's will get more respect off Male Footballers, wont be as abusive.

Away at Cheltenham a few seasons ago was the first Football League game where both 'Assistant Referees' were female.

It is the 21st century and the girls should be welcomed warmly, and as football is also entertainment maybe we could see them is "tailored", less frumpy attire than the men, tighter ,shorter shorts , maybe a bit of lycra?

Congratulations to her, male or female makes no difference, it's the way they control the game. I just hope she makes some better decisions than we've been used to from some of her counterparts over the past few years.

Congratulations to Rebecca. Lets hope refereeing standards improve as a result of more female officials. Some of the current crop of male referees are awful!

I've had a complaint about this post. I suspect that mrpotatohead is actually being ironic and it is actually taking the p*** out of then FIFA President Seb Blatter, who said that female football as a sport could be made more interesting to a wider audience if the players wore "tighter shorts."

They do say if you have to explain the 'joke' it isn't funny but I'll let it go at the moment because I think he's actually supportive of equality and opposed to the likes of Blatter.

Oh deary me....

This for me just sums up the way that some people can find fault with anything, everything and everybody and is a sad reflection of the complaining culture that seems more prevalent today than ever before.

Sad, very sad.... :( :( :(

Not really. If taken purely as a 'joke' it would be clearly sexist and not appropriate in an inclusive forum. I don't think the complaint lacked validity. I only left it up because of my perceived target being sexist old men rather than women.

As an actual female I've been really cheered by the positive response on here to Ms Welch's appointment - and by the general lack of response to the somewhat dated 'banter.' It really is the 21st century! The more diversity in ref appointments, the better it will be for the whole game.
