O/T Qatar World Cup?

O/T Qatar World Cup?

Postby Keith » Wed Mar 31, 2021 12:26 pm

Should England and other countries boycott the World Cup in Qatar due to their human rights record as Norway is considering doing? Is there a line that should be drawn? If not, then would a World Cup in North Korea be acceptable? If North Korea isn't acceptable, then where is the line?

I hadn't realised, but because of the way Norwegian football clubs are owned and managed, grass-root fans will decide what happens to the national team, regardless of what the Norwegian FA want.

"A line must be drawn somewhere, and for Norwegian football fans, that line is a World Cup in Qatar. Awarding the festival of football to an apartheid-like state accused of practising modern-day slavery is the epitome of the greed and corruption at play in the higher echelons of football governance".

“Britain faces a simple and inescapable choice - stability and strong Government with me, or chaos with Ed Miliband: ".

David Cameron. May 4th 2015.
So how did that work out then?

I am always reluctant in dragging sport into politics but this venue was agreed through corruption anyway.
If some of the other major footballing nations were to agree to withdraw we should do so as well. However it will take at least 4 or 5 of the big teams withdrawing to make any difference.

Should the US be banned from sport and other events for it's use of force by its police force?

Should China be banned for its lack of press freedom?

Should GB be banned for its trade in slavery many decades ago?

Where will it end..... :?: :?: :?:

Much the same as GBR, USA, and others boycotting the 1980 Moscow olympics when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. For those of us old enough to remember that far back.
