The 46-year-old joins the club on a three year deal after spending a successful three and a half years at Motherwell, leading the Steelmen to two Cup finals in one season and a top three finish which also brought Europa League football to the club.

Robinson made 448 appearances during his playing career and had spells with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, AFC Bournemouth, Preston North End and Luton Town before hanging up his boots in 2008. He also played seven times for the Northern Ireland national team.

He first joined Motherwell as their assistant manager six years ago under Ian Baraclough and also held the same role with the Northern Ireland national team alongside that.

After a spell as manager at Oldham Athletic he returned to Motherwell before taking over as boss.

Stephen said: "I am delighted to have agreed to become the manager of Morecambe FC and I am really looking forward to the challenge ahead.

"I have been very impressed with the club and everyone involved in the process. We are looking to build on last season's successful promotion campaign and look to firmly establish the club in league One.

"There is a lot of work in terms of recruitment in the coming weeks and getting us prepared for the club's first season in League One.''

Morecambe joint chairman, Rod Taylor said: "We are delighted that Stephen has agreed to join us for our first season in League One.

"We had a number of quality applicants but we were especially impressed by Stephen's dynamism, his plans for the club and his contacts and we believe he will take the club forward.

"He has an excellent reputation and we are looking forward to working with him as we plan for an historic season.''

Fellow Joint Chairman, Graham Howse, added: "We went on record that we wanted to move quickly on this appointment and we have every confidence in Stephen putting a strong squad together for life in League One.''

John McMahon will remain as the club's assistant manager with former Shrimps striker Diarmuid O'Carroll returning to the club as first team coach after working with Robinson successfully at Motherwell.

Feel positive about this appointment! Well done to the board once again. I know we don't have much of a sample size, but I love how they've not just picked up managers from the merry-go-round for the sake of 'knowing the level'.

Style of play time! I've been doing some reading over the past day or two since rumours started coming out. Initially, he had Motherwell playing in quite a direct and physical 3-5-2 (Ryan Bowman up front), for some context of that I'd recommend watching the highlights of his two cup semi finals with Motherwell. Bustling, aggressive and direct.

Then there was quite a sudden change of style - from what I gather this was halfway through the 18/19 season - and he went to a 4-3-3 with less focus on being direct and more on good movement/interchanging between the midfield and attack. Wingers tended to stay quite wide apparently, with the central midfielders offering a lot of movement. Might really suit Wildig and possibly Sully centrally.

He seems to be have had some level of success with both styles, but I'd assume the latter is the more likely he'll go with. I think he will be evaluating how our current squad might work in that, how his system might need tweaking and who to prioritise keeping for that purpose. Exciting and fascinating times ahead!

Edit: I've just had a read of this excellent JJ Bull piece last year breaking down Robinson's style of play with Motherwell: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/20 ... rned-play/

John McMahon and Diarmuid O'Carroll. It's great to know we're getting a Shrimps old and new linkage going, and with D.O'C. having worked with Steve Robinson in the past, hopefully a good game understanding between the three. Welcome along Steven.

Happy with this. O'Carroll was a skilful striker so hopefully he is an attacking coach. So glad to see that JM has been kept on, his input will be vital.

A new era beckons

Quite a strange story from which he seems to emerge about as creditably as possible, I would say.

Graham H teasing a bit in his interview on Radio Lancs, talking about targeting 'names that might be familiar to fans of MFC'

SR came across well on Lancs. I liked the way he gave a nod to the achievements of last season, the urgency to get things sorted with the squad and the way he knows L1&2. There were no outlandish statements or soundbites, just a sense of realism of the task ahead. I thought he was quite impressive.

O'carroll was good as well could we finally see a decent link from the first team to academy and a line of talent coming through which we can sell on to help us become sustainable.

The most surprising thing is Graham talking about our budget for this next season. Curious to know whereabouts that number might be.

If Yann does leave I'd have either of those two back.
