Goalkeepers and long punts up field

One of the things that in the English game we persist with even more so at International level is the insistence for our goalkeepers to at nearly every occasion to revert to the long punt up field rather than the simple and more effective throw out to a defender at the back.

Last night we persisted with the same old same old long goalkeepers ball upfield which time after time ended up too far ahead of our front players and was easy for the Italian back line to once more dictate play from the back.

I can't recall that many occasions when their goalkeeper did the same preferring to play it out to a defender who was able to play it around waiting for us to commit ourselves.

Surely by now our tacticians should be aware of the ineffectiveness of the goalkeeper's punt up the field. :?: :?: :?:

It's time we took lessons from the Italians and other European teams that playing from the back retains possession and control of the game.

Unfortunately even at club level it's too easy to opt for the norm BUT maybe it's a lack of technical skill at certain levels that dictate such play.... :?: :?: :?:

In the first few minutes we were caught out by dilly dallying around our own penalty area like a fair few top teams do nowadays. We instantly got caught out with Italys high pressing and gave away a daft corner.

The hoof you talk about was then applied

Thommo's "hoof" was pretty effective to Carleton a few years ago! :D

Exactly! He did look to see where DC was before "hoofing" a perfect pass for him to run onto! :D
