A captain should lead by example and provide verbal communication to his fellow defenders and midfield operatives.

It's was said in a previous thread that he was quick to have a pop at Sam and on the very rare occasion when he actually said any thing yesterday it was to have another pop at a colleague this time being Delaney.

SR has been superb in attracting some outstanding talent but his selection of O'Conner as Club Captain I'm afraid for me is wrong as he does not communicate and appears to blame everybody else for mistakes and at times looked totally disinterested in what was going on around him as he stood with his hands on his hips giving the impression not only to myself but a number around me that he is not of leadership material.

He was indecisive on too many occasions when given ball by the goalkeeper and appeared unsure what to do with it.

I just hope that SR acts quickly and selects Toums as the Captain going forward as he was providing encouragement to his colleagues throughout the game and showed the leadership qualities that we have become familiar with from the now departed Sam.

Tuesday is the ideal time to introduce the experienced Wootton and Jacob Mensah who was named one of the best young players in non league in 2019 into the back line because on the evidence of yesterday we have serious problems in the centre of our defense from both O'Conner and Delaney.

In was good to see that both Sam and Carlos made their debuts for their new clubs yesterday :)

I would be amazed if that happens. Firstly the. message it sends to O'Conner would be the wrong one. and potentially very damaging. Secondly, SR doesn't think 'captain' is that important, he wants [expects?] leadership throughout the side. Tooms already provides that, he doesn't need the armband.

Still very early days.

O'Conner was Captain at Aberdeen.

He most certainly didn't live up to how SR spoke of him prior to yesterdays game.

How about a Bollocks Post of the Month Award culminating in a Bollocks Post of the Year Award at the end of thge season. This must have a good chance for September.

I'm not the only one who feels that he's not Captain material, in fact some even suggest he shouldn't be in the match day squad.

One game too many as Captain for me.....

Can't believe some of the attitudes here, some of you would be cross if we got to the premier league and lost by a goal to Man City I swear.

I think RedRobbo was referring to my comments yesterday which I stand by , O’Connor had a poor game yesterday . He never looked comfortable when he he’d the ball often hesitating and ending up passing back to the Goalkeeper . As for captain I can’t recall him being vocal at any time during the game, sometimes being captain doesn’t suit the player ! . My opinion, like it or lump it

It’s very clear we haven’t replaced Sam from within the squad. No pace on display from centre defence and no quality distribution. We barely won a cross into our box. The manager obviously thought we could cope with Sam’s transfer. On yesterday’s showing there must be some doubt.

The gaffer sees OConnor day in day out ... If he thinks he should be the captain then so be it !!!

If people don`t like the gaffer`s decision maybe they should speak to him about it instead of slagging off the decision

We lost to a AFC Wimbledon side yesterday who have only lost once this season (Sunderland away) and have scored goals for fun so it`s not end of the world

Sheffield Wednesday conceded 3 , Rotherham conceded 4 , Charlton conceded 2 and Ipswich conceded 5 yesterday and all got beat plus Pompey lost as well - we have played 6 league games and are probably where we should be in the league

If we finished in this position after 46 games i would be more than happy

I don’t disagree with any of the above , but it doesn’t change anything I said earlier and I will be more than delighted for him to prove me wrong ! .

Gibson did play as a C/B against Wimbledon in the first half with Greg Leigh on the left.

A captain performance.
A Man of the Match performance.
Straight to the crowd to celebrate our second goal.
Straight to the crowd to celebrate at full time.

This thread has aged well, eh RedRobo?

O Connor and Wooton look very solid at the back

Lavelle was a decent player but some charlton fans don’t think so

Adkins must be close to the sack at the Valley

This is one charlton fan marking his team tonight

MacG: 6
Matthews: 6
Lavelle: 4 He's not capable at this level from what I've seen
Famewo: 5 Worse or better than Pearce?
Purrington: 5.5 Someone remind him he has a right foot
Clare: 6.5 Burned out but played well
Watson: 6
Lee: 6
Leko: 6
Davison: 6.5
B-T; 7 Thought he was great, but Adkins leaving him on as long as he did was criminal.
Washington: 5
Referee: 5

Bit my tongue when this thread was initially started, but I cannot believe some of the negative comments towards O'Connor. He hasn't been perfect, but he's done some very good defensive work and looked good on the ball. Not sure if this is some weird bias because he's not Lavelle.

Tonight he had his best performance - some great defensive work in tricky situations and carried the ball well to try and take the game to Lincoln a bit more, often ending with some decent passes. He's come to the home end every game I can remember off the top of my head, and did again tonight.

Anyone who hasn't listened yet, you really should get on the podcast with him. He speaks very well, is thoughtful about the game and wants to do well with the club:

On leaving us Sam did state that he would be back one day. It may be sooner than he thinks. Whether he could get in the side now is debatable. SR has produced a Wooton out of the hat and he ain't doing bad!

As much as I rate Sam, I prefer wootton tbh. He’s been a brilliant replacement so far.
