Poor numbers from Stanley

Was very disappointed in the numbers that turned up from Stanley. Just over 500 for a local derby was terrible.

Yet another incredible home support of over 3600 which a few of us could only dream of a season ago.

The way we got behind our lads when 2-3 down was brilliant and Cole the Goal responded as we all know he can.

Just wish Cole would look a wee bit more happy when he scores.....   ;)

Do Stanley see a fixture against us as a local derby? Geographically they’re closer to Rochdale, Oldham and other Lancashire clubs than they are to Morecambe.

I know some of our fans consider them to be a rival, but I’m not sure if that’s a reciprocal feeling. In fact, a lot of the animosity our fans seem to have towards them stems from the fact that we’ve performed so poorly in fixtures against Accy during the last 15 years or so…. and perhaps enviously watched on as they overtook us on the field. So why would they consider us to be a rival? I remember when some Stanley fans came to support Morecambe when we first reached the playoffs…. Bringing flags, drums etc.

For me it’s a rivalry that means more to some of our supporters (one born out of modern convenience due to our growth and the simultaneous decline of Lancaster City, Barrow and Southport) than it does to them. It is therefore unrealistic to expect Accy to bring more fans to a Morecambe game on the basis of rivalry, purely because we consider it to be derby. The Stanley fans that did come made plenty of noise and contributed to what was a terrific atmosphere - which should be applauded, not derided.

Finally, if you do not go to away games yourself - you are in absolutely no position to criticise the size of anybodies following.

I would say, and this isn’t a criticism of Accy, when teams bring low numbers we should stick them all in one stand and put the big “playing all the right notes” banner across the terrace section….. bravo to whoever designed that ;)

I thought 500+ from Accy was a good turnout. We will probably take the same amount to their place later in the season. As for the rivalry i don't really see it either, just a contrived one. The only thing that bugs me about them is that they are "the club that never died" apart from the 6 years they weren't in existence!

Yes, as a pedant, this also gripes with me….. in addition to claiming lineage with football league founders Accrington FC (a completely separate team that coexisted with the original Stanley) and classing themselves as founder members of the FL.

It’s a good point. The club did die, and reformed in 1968, played somewhere else but just took the name.
I suppose as they didn’t die permanently then they can get away with it. :)

Their fans are getting a bit narky about this on Twitter and in response are posting pictures of lots of flags. They do love a flag those Accrington fans.

Accrington will struggle for numbers in October as Burnley are offering 9 tickets for £90 to celebrate Dyche being there for 9 years.
