New striker wanted

New striker wanted

Postby redrobo » Sun Jan 16, 2022 6:08 pm

Quinny's co commentator was spot on yesterday when he said that Cole badly needs someone to play alongside him but as it stands we've nobody looking to provide that much needed link.

An additional striker is needed but where we find one will be a problem unless we can find someone possibly at National league level who wants to step up to the next level , but every club is looking for someone similar. Unfortunately money is the problem and we can't compete with the majority of clubs at our level.

Maybe our recruitment guru can find someone as he puts in the miles nationwide to find that special one...

:?: :?: :?:

This guy would do.... :D but he'd cost a few pennies..... ;)

Throw another one into the ring. Dom Telford at Newport. Scoring for fun in EFL 2.

Local lad from Clitheroe which may help. Maybe he still has a yearning for God's County? Would undoubtedly need money but if we don't have it now we never will.

We've got plenty of strikers. When we play 3-5-2, we've got the options of Obika, Ayunga, Duffus and Gnahoua to play alongside Stockton. However, we tend to play 4-3-3 a majority of the time anyway, where there's only one spot for a centre forward.

Will never understand the obsession that creeps in about playing someone up top with Stockton. One of the best things about Stockton is how well he's able to operate as a lone striker.

The way to link play/support him is to have the rest of the team getting up with him and linking in that way. Not just arbitrarily shoving another striker next to him. He played up top on his own for almost all of last season and we had one of the best attacks in the division.

I think another option out wide would be helpful, but there's no need for another centre forward.

Totally agree. If you stick somebody up top with Cole you have to change the whole system. It is a really simplistic and short sighted shout from a football fan when a team is struggling. We need creativity, somebody to create and chip in with a few goals. Ayunga and Obika have both played up top alongside Cole in a 352 and it hasn't worked really. Obika worries me, I don't think he has shaken off the injury as he hasn't sprinted once since he returned.

Personally I think I've seen enough of McDonald, Gnahoua, Obika, Duffus and Ayunga to realise they ain't currently EFL 1 standard. Not to say they can't blossom, as Cole has in the last two seasons, but currently they ain't cutting the mustard, so to speak.

On Saturday I thought McDonald did well enough when he came on as sub. It appears he has been told to cut out the ineffectual multiple step overs (thank goodness) as he never tried it once and his game was all the better for it.

Not sure where we go with the rest and I suspect Cole is getting a tad fed up (as per his recent body language) at the lack of support for him up top.

Tend to agree with the above but feel that Obeka will come good eventuality but by then our fate may be sealed hence why I go along with the opinion of the football coach who sat alongside Quinny at AFC Wimbledon.

If Cole hits a bad patch then there is nobody to take on the role of goal scorer hence why for me we badly need another proven striker.

Almost every club in efl1 is after a striker which doesn't make it any easier.

Listening to our manager it sounds as though a striker isn't a high priority at this transfer window. :( :( :x :(

You've kind of missed the entire point of mine and BW's posts. Football's not as simple as 'just stick another striker up top and our problems will go away'.

We already use a system that has two up top in 3-5-2. There haven't been any consistent attacking benefits from it.

Just saying that we need two up top is not a particularly well thought through statement. It's disappointing that that's all a paid football pundit comes up with if I'm honest! What system are you suggesting should be played? How do we create chances in that system? What kind of striker do you think is needed alongside Stockton? What other members of the team are sacrificed to make way? How is balance and structure maintained in the team?

Also - this nonsense of a proven striker. We don't get proven strikers at this level. We don't get Josh Magennis, or Charlie Wyke, or Macauley Bonne etc. We find players - like Cole and Carlos - who have a bit of something and fashion them into more valuable and better players.

You could play 4 up top but if you have no means of creating chances then it is as much use as a fish with tits. Teams play with 3 in the middle so if we went 442, we would be over run in there. We don't have any wingers who can cross either so it is pointless. It is a lazy shout from fans who think it will change our fortunes.

Off the scale that one.

I remember 4 or 5 years ago, when we played for a clean sheet, conceded, then had 4 or 5 strikers running around like headless chickens without a midfield

:D A fish with tits!! :D
We need Phillips back and firing as he is, as we have said before “High risk, high reward” midfielder who can unlock defences. He’s isn’t the complete answer I understand that, but we have missed him in form!

Yes, I remember the Jim Bentley days where if we were losing a game and running out of time, we’d play a 4-2-4 and just punt it up the pitch over and over - almost always to no effect whatsoever. It’s definitely down to how we play, not the number of players we stick up the top end of the pitch.

If ever a game cried out for someone to play alongside Cole and be an additional striker then tonight's game v Wigan was surely proof positive of the need.

Wigan had at least options on the bench in addition to the front two who started.

Have to say that SR made a tactical error in putting Gibbo on when Leigh clearly only need an extra mi ute to run off his injury. It was then that the Wigan manger put their best player on the night to put constant pressure on our left and it was that move that created problems down that side and Gibbo was run ragged.

Wimbledon got a point tonight so we are now 3 points adrift at the wrong end of the table.
