It's a frightening statistic but we haven't scored an away goal in 2023 after drawing blanks at Port Vale, Ipswich,Derby, Sheffield Wednesday and now Fleetwood. Our last away goal was on 17th December at Plymouth when the game was already lost.A player who is no longer with us scored. Anthony O'Connor struck in stoppage time. This worrying trend needs to be altered when we play Cambridge away otherwise relegation looms. It emphasises that we desperately need a striker and the opportunity to sign one in the transfer window has been missed. How much is that going to cost us if we are relegated?

Port Vale away was Boxing Day in 2022 so the blanks in 2023 have been Ipswich , Derby , Sheffield Wednesday and Fleetwood. The first 3 of those are not surprising , probably only Fleetwood where you could say we would be disappointed not to score.

If Cole is not fully fit we desperately need an experienced free agent target man/striker. The fact that we haven't signed one suggests that the finances are not too healthy. Maybe something will happen this week.

Or we can't find one?

As soon as I saw the way we were lining up, I knew we weren't going to score. I know there are people on here who disagree with me, but Mellon, isolated up front, on his own, was always going t o struggle. Gnahoua was having a good game, albeit, with no final ball. Then, Mellon comes off, Gnahoua up front on his own, and he barely touched the ball again. When he did, it was in our own half. Gnahoua & Mellon up front together may work. What we know is one up front isn't working.

One shot on target, yet we apparently deserved something from the game? We need to be scoring 100% of our chances if we create so little. Fortunately, against Port Vale we did that. Yesterday, and most games, we don't.
