Similar statement on Barrow OWS, from the rumours I'm hearing, someone could be in a lot of trouble, Barrow say a director has been arrested

Barrow statement:

" The Club has issued a statement following Tuesday evening's game against Morecambe FC.

We are aware of an allegation of racist abuse being directed at a Barrow AFC staff member during Tuesday evening’s Sky Bet League Two fixture at The So Legal Stadium.

The Club would like to make it absolutely clear that we abhor discrimination in all its forms and will take the strongest action possible, including pursuing life bans, for anyone found guilty of racism.

We will be conducting a thorough investigation and would appeal to any fans who may have witnessed any discriminatory abuse to please come forward.

We would like to thank Barrow AFC Stewards and Barrow police for their swift actions in identifying the individual."

This is from yesterday's Independent:

"Police arrest 70-year-old man after alleged racist abuse during Barrow vs Morecambe
The incident occurred during the League Two match on Tuesday evening

Cumbria Police have arrested a 70-year-old man as Barrow alleged one of their staff members was racially abused during their home game against Morecambe.

Police said they were investigating “an incident of a racially aggravated hate crime” during Barrow’s 1-0 League Two win against Morecambe on Tuesday night at The So Legal Stadium and that the man remains in custody.

Cumbria Constabulary said in a statement: “Police are investigating an incident of a racially aggravated hate crime that occurred during the Barrow AFC v Morecambe FC football match in Barrow (31 October).

“A 70-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated Section 4a Public Order Act and remains in police custody.

“Any hate-related incidents will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly.”

I suppose that the identity of this individual will emerge eventually. Somebody knows who they are - given that they are in custody; it would be difficult to hide, wouldn't it?

Probably the case, but until an official comment is made, I don't want to deal with speculation, hints, or innuendo on here!

'Community Resolution'
'such orders are offered when someone admits an offence, and in most cases, where the victim has agreed that they do not want more formal action taken.'

So the offence did take place and has been admitted and it stays on the persons record to be taken into account if there are any further offences. That sounds very much like a charge to me.

Somebody got very lucky by the sounds of it.

I don't suppose there will be any further official comment, the carpetright Black Friday sale continues ;)

Rest assured, if a general supporter had made public comments that were deemed as discriminatory, regardless of context, that individual would have received a one year stadium ban via a faceless threatening email (followed in quick succession by emails advertising hospitality deals.... that's Morecambe FC that) and accompanied by confirmation that the incident had been reported to the police and warned about future conduct. There would be no opportunity to explain the circumstances surrounding such comments, dispute the claims outright (which are not being disputed in this instance), apologise, appeal the clubs decision, or even convey their own version of events. You know it, I know it, everybody knows it.

I am not suggesting that this individual should be banned, merely highlighting inconsistencies in approach. I hope that going forwards when/if future incidents of this nature do occur, people are afforded the same treatment - and are at least invited to the club to explain themselves as there have been instances where the club has not been as evenhanded in my opinion.

Also worth highlighting the complete absence of commentary from the usual protagonists on here who would ordinarily have been casting stones - we've always known what way your bread is buttered.

I've had a friend go through this, they were stopped at the turnstile and issued with a letter calling them homophobic. No right of appeal, just a straight ban. Thanks to the hard work of the Trust this was overturned, as it simply did not happen. It left a life long fan in distress and having to even explain the situation to their employer. One rule for one.... I thought better of our club.

Except, as you know, that is bollocks. After the Bolton bull***t was demonstrated not to have any truth, other than in the fevered mind of a cheating manager, the person accused was allowed to return. That sounds like it was EXACTLY the same process.

I'm not even sure who you are referring to or how? There has been the potential of a court case hanging over this, so any discussion had to be very limited, or potentially result in some serious trouble. The Bolton case was spread all over the Manchester Evening News and caused a huge disruption to the match, so obviously that was worthy of further discussion.

I'm sorry Keith but I have witnessed how the club treated a fan of over 30 years, who most importantly was completely innocent, and it it really wasn't exactly the same.

Sad to say but it was nothing but disgusting.

Glad to hear that your friend was able to get this overturned - and also pleased that the Trust was able to assist with this; proof again of the need for and value of an organisation like this.

I was very reluctant to respond to this thread, its clearly a sensitive topic. Thank you for your reply, which expands upon the inconsistency of treatment adopted by the club, and further highlights a heavy-handed unfair process that needs to change.

I must say, I’m a tad miffed by how this has been handled too. No mention on either club’s websites or social media. No mention of your man being banned from Holker Street for future games etc. I respect Emile’s wishes if he didn’t want to press charges but if it were a humble supporter from either side then I’m sure the zero tolerance message of the original statements would have been followed through by the club.

One rule for one etc.
