What an uninspiring England performance led in my opinion by an uninspiring manager. I can’t believe Southgate has picked the best squad and leaving out Rashford and Grealish questionable. I am afraid we are making up the numbers in Germany and we are nowhere near good enough to get much further.

Yup. Good job we've not played a decent side yet. We can improve, and need to do so quickly.

Always the same will just do enough to get through and as soon as we play someone good we will be out. We have never been at the same level as the top countries.

It's no good having some elite footballers when the Manager is out of his depth. He needs sacking for this Trent experiment alone, how can we have the midfielders we have but have such an awful midfield.

The contrast between Southgate and Guardiola is embarrassing. At city Foden looks a class player. In the England set up he looks very ordinary. At international level a good team needs a flair player or two. players like Grealish and Rashford- capable of the unexpected and with a bit of quality. Southgate goes for solid, workmanlike players who just lack that bit of quality. He was a poor manager in the league and he is now a poor manager at the international level.

I think what made things worse was the Spain performance in the game vs Italy that followed the England match... admittedly they won 1-0 due to an own goal, but they were high tempo, great on the ball and good to watch; everything that England weren't.
Lots of talk about picking the best system and tactics to get the most out of what is a talented squad on paper - but ultimately if you are lethargic, passive, and don't run I think you'll come up short in whatever system you play.

I never thought Gerrard and Lampard work well and that was supposed be be a dream pairing.

I kind of get what people are saying about Southgate, but I'd also say he's the most successful England manager in my lifetime, and I'm 56.

Mostly come on here to read now don't tend to comment but I'll bite at this. This is the typical arrogance of English fans/media. You have played two decent sides, you were lucky not to lose to Denmark we were far, far better than you. We have won a European Championship, you have not. Your midfield was outclassed by a player who literally died at the last tournament. You need to have a bit of respect for opposition rather than write anyone and everyone off as, not decent sides. You lost 4-0 at home to Hungary not long ago and they've not got a point.

I started this thread and have no criticism of the Danish team. They deserved the draw and could have won. My criticism is of the England manager, the squad he picked and the performance they put in. The team don’t seem to have practiced when to press when not, the manager has not selected flair players like Grealish and Rashford and the squad seem obsessed with aimless square passes to one another. I also hope I’m wrong but time at international level looks like it’s coming to an end for Kane.

Perhaps 'no decent sides' was a bit of a heavy handed way of describing it, but I think the point Keith was trying to make is that we haven't faced any really top sides yet such as Germany or France etc, who I think would have had a field day against England playing like they have.
Instead, Denmark were ok but ultimately a draw was a fair result. For all England's faults, Guehi has done excellently in defence and that area looks strong - I don't think Denmark really had any really good chances in the box and only scored from a long range effort. England scored from a chance in the box and could still have won it late on with a 1v1 effort from Watkins, despite the poor performance.
I think the Trent in midfield experiment was fair, but clearly hasn't worked out. I think it may have to be Gallagher as the solution, although against Slovenia Mainoo or Wharton should be given a go - we already know the deal with Gallagher, less so those two.
Not bringing a left footed back-up to Shaw looks a huge oversight though and I'm not sure how you solve that problem. Also think it was a mistake not bringing Grealish - not had the best season but we know the top level quality he has that can change a game.

What ever happens is down to the tactics of the manager and our problem now is, will he be pig headed and continue exactly like he has the team set up and play.? Or will he change it and set up differently with dropping a few?
I’d drop Trent and put Watkins up front with Kane in false number 9 or drop Trent and play with just Rice in front of the back four, move Foden inside to his Man City position and put Gordon on the left.
I just know because I don’t expect anything that they will have a reasonable competition again and Southgate will be sold as a good coach. When will people see he has won nothing.

Just out of curiosity, how do English fans feel about Scotland? I'm cheering the Tartan Army on tonight. Internationally, I want England to do well, Welsh second (Welsh grandad) then Scotland and the Irish teams. I guess I'm proud to be 'British' more than English?
And, I've wondered previously, do English folk have more of a soft-spot for Scotland, the further north you are from?
Or, perhaps that's bollocks, and most people on here are cheering Hungary on this evening???

Definite penalty. I thought they had VAR for such decisions?
