I haven't lived locally for years, but as a youngster did all my crabbing in the Boating Lake where the Moby Dick was tied-up. Played all my crazy golf on the course between the Swimming Baths and the Boating Lake too, and a bit of Swing Boating.....great times as a youngster then, always safe, and always plenty to do simply by using innocent imagination.
A natural progression from crabbing, for me at least, was sea fishing from the end of the Stone Jetty long before the flood defences and the jetty being extended.
As for the crazy golf, that progressed to pitch-n-putt at a course on a large open grassed field along the prom between Sandylands and Heysham.
Happy and safe days, which are sadly a distant memory.

I grew up on Twemlow Parade which overlooks the Pitch n Putt you mention and I have now returned to live in the family house I have inherited. Back in the day the pitch n putt was privately owned and was beautifully looked after , little fairways cut and proper greens , the owner sold pop and crisps. Then he died , the council took it over and as with many things publicly owned it went to rack and ruin. Dogs are walked on it now and it is a minefield !

We followed a similar line Peter..
Parents had a Bingo stall on the Winter Gardens. Crabbing next to Moby Dick, seafood from the van parked adjacent, spent all day in the Super Swimming Stadium. Marineland, zoo on the jetty.
Then progressed to digging 2 foot king ragworm just beyond the pool, then fishing off the choice of Central Pier, West End Pier and the jetty.
Happy Mount Park was also the place to be.
So much to do in those days, even entered the News of the World fishing competition behind the baths, not a mobile phone in sight, happy days.
Yes I believe the pool at Bare is now the place to be for crabbing.

I can just about remb the pitch and put at Heysham and there was also one at the back of happy mount park.
Sunny slopes is nowhere near as good as it was either I used to spend hours going up and down all the little paths on my bike, and when I was really small can just about remb on hot days going to the small pool it had with the waterfall.

I read this post at 4.00am when I let my old dog out and couldn't get back to sleep thinking about these old times gone!
Crazy Golf, Stone Jetty and Swimming baths were some of our favourite haunts plus Burton's snooker room. Can't remember the name of the guy who ran it but seem to think he had a limp. Our pitch and put was played at Happy Mount Park but our fishing was done from one of the fisherman's punts just off the Central Pier. Oh, and it never rained in those days!

Think you refer to Jacks snooker Hall, Mr Morse Jack Ridalsh, taught a lot of youngsters how to play.
Forgot to mention Heysham Head, Winged World and the Go Karts

Yes , Jack Ridehalgh ran the club over Burtons Tailors. His cues all seemed to be warped !
Syd Youren and his 2 brothers ran the Dev Snooker club which is now More Music. Before they had the roof fixed if you got on the wrong table rain could stop play !!

There was also a pitch 'n putt course down at Half Moon Bay.....now long gone...I used to love playing on that when I was a lad.
Now the filed is just a means to get to The Barrow and the location of the SHIP sculpture. I was there last year, taking a fee snaps, an elderly lady came strolling past and I asked her if she liked the sculpture "It's hideous! How dare they put in on ancient Viking grasslands!"
I never knew Vikings played pitch 'n putt...

Very similar. My nan lived on Dalton Road, and we spent a lot of summer holidays with her, while mum & dad worked. Playing on the beach, cycling on the slopes, climbing over fences at Heysham Head. And yes, crabbing at Sandylands pool.

Some great memories stirred by this post, and thanks to all. We used to live on Lister Grove near The Strawberry Gardens and spent many happy hours on various pitch and putts, beaches, etc etc. Also spent lots of happy hours in Heysham Village, kicking a football around, and eating fish and chips on the way back home afterwards. Also a connection to Morecambe Football Club with Althams Butchers being in the village of course.
And for those of you who may have glanced across at the football pitch on Barrows Lane when you were up at Heysham Head, if it was a Saturday afternoon and Heysham FC were playing, I was the tall guy in goal for the locals. Mind you that was more than 50 Years ago!!!!
Lovely thread that this is, doesn't it also say something about the current lack of info coming out of Morecambe Football Club. THAT IS SAD.

Will no doubt be taking my 4 year old grand daughter crabbing at some point in the near future. Will probably be at the Bare pool as that is where I used to go some 65 years ago with my step father and had a wonderful time I seem to recall.
Other favourite haunts in the town used to be the now long gone swimming stadium where I had my bike nicked around 1967 or there abouts. Many fond memories of hour after hour of enjoying the aqua show and trying to convince a former girl friend and first love
that i wasn't a total prat....unsuccessfully i might add.
Also used to take part in the cycle races on the prom from 1969 until 1972 when I smashed myself up and called it a day.
Happy days but of course the most enjoyable where at Christie Park come rain or shine.....

On the crabbing experience
I used to go down to sandylands pool pick a large pebble from the beach walk to the corner of the pool, with a couple of slips on the seaweed, put my arm in the water and pull some mussels off the side and smash one open and tie some string round and drop it in,
Probs all that will be outlawed now :-
Dragging it from it’s home
Attacking it with an blunt instrument
Tieing it up
Throwing in in the water
And left to the mercy of the occupants of the pool
“I was just a child m’lord “
Good innocent fun
