daughter just returned from nightmare trip to lancaster, accident between scalehall area and greyhound bridge area ( she thinks), she was diverted at scalehall, round ryelands park, and diverted off greyhound bridge again round ryelands park

so allow extrs time if travelling into lancaster

Took me an hour and a half to get from Westgate to the Uni this morning. Torrisholme was at a standstill managed to get to Skerton thinking Lancaster Centre would be ok but that was just as bad so went on the Mway at 34 to 33 and off at galgate. Caton Rd was backed up past the Mway Junction and beyond and traffic was queing to come off the Mway on the North and South Bound sides.

Yeah the accident , a lorry overturned and shed its load [kindling / bags of wood] , at the bend between Scale Hall Lane and Summersgill rd. Its a bit of a job clearing the road both sides but there cracking on with a fork lift and by hand.

I don't know if there was any casualties etc. But the lorry cab looks a real mess. Its very strange to see that stretch of road between Carlisle bridge and Scale Hall Lane without traffic bumper to bumper and its been gridlock round here all morning. I think a lot of people [school kids] were getting off the buses and walking into Lancaster as it was quicker.

If we had half decent public transport then people might. I know I refuse to pay out the sort of money that Stagecoach are chaging and then my journey would take even longer on the bus prob an extra 30mins each way easily.

Cycling is an option but walking has to be possible for most of these 'shorter' trip that people do and clog up our roads

I don't think they had any choice! My two kids had to walk from Scale Hall Lane to Our Lady's because the buses weren't going any further. No probs, though. The walk did them good and they had a good look at the lorry as they walked right past it!

It may be interesting to advise younger readers that there used to be another railway connecting Lancaster and Morecambe which ran alongside the road at Scale Hall where there used to be a station which was open for about seven years. The line ran from Heysham Harbour into Morecambe where the train reversed, then went to Lancaster Green Ayre station (now Sainsbury's) where it reversed again for the short trip up to Castle Station, as it was then known.

On this line in 1965, you could make a round trip from Promenade Station to Castle Station, including reversals at Green Ayre and Castle in, wait for it, 27 minutes.

Any guesses as to how long the journey would take in 2008 by car, even on a good day?

I suspect we haven't progressed far in 43 years!

For those who start work in Lancaster at 9.00 there is a bus from Euston Road at 8.17 that gets into Lancaster Bus Station at 8.44. I'm not sure, but i think a 7 day pass on Stagecoach is £12.99

She could have got a bus direct to Ambleside from Lancaster. Depending on which is most convenient for her she could have got on it outside Our Ladys or on Slyne Road

Which would take how long? - between 2 and 2.5 hours as to less than an hour in your own car, adding a possible 3 hours to your normal day.
