Morecambe isolated - Greyhound Bridge closed

Morecambe isolated - Greyhound Bridge closed

Postby Posh » Thu Nov 13, 2008 4:58 pm

Just found out that Greyhound Bridge is closed due to an accident and a fire on the bridge. Also on the radio that Morecambe Road is also closed due to a separate accident.

If you thought the traffic was bad last week then think again. The one-way system is totally gridlocked and hasn't moved for at least 15 minutes.

It sounds quite bad! This seems to be happening more and more often along that strech of road.

It's times like this I'm glad I live and work in Morecambe, I could'nt be doing with the drive in and out of Lancaster every day!

One and a half hours from the uni came out the back of the uni and it was even queued up down the lanes to there :o went on the Mway to carnforth and crawled to Bolton le sands but once we got on the A6 at the lights everything was gridlocked going to Morecambe and we were the only car on the A6 all the way to Skerton very very strange. They were queued on the Mway roundabout for the over kellet rad and the halton rd seemed jammed as well.
By the time we got to Rylands park Morecambe rd had just opened again but torrisholme rd heading to lancaster was still gridlocked.

Lancaster got a mention on Sally traffic though :D

That is 3 times in less than two weeks it has been a nightmare on Monday it was a nightmare just because of one set of temporary lights on Caton Rd.

Amid all the chaos, we should spare a few thoughts for the pedestrian with serious head injuries who hopefully will survive ............

taken from todays evening post
A CYCLIST was in a critical condition in the Royal Lancaster Infirmary with serious head injuries after being hit by a lorry on Morecambe Road yesterday (Thursday afternoon).
The 25-year-old local man was pulling out of Summersgill Road when the collision occurred with a Volvo FM 300 rigid HGV at around 2.45pm.

Police said the HGV was passing a double decker bus – travelling in the same direction in the bus lane – when the cyclist pulled out across the path of the bus before colliding with the front of the HGV.

The driver of the HGV, a 40 year old man from Hull, suffered shock. A full investigation is now underway.

Sergeant Nigel Ralphson, who is leading the investigation, said: "I would appeal to anybody who witnessed the collision to contact police.
"I am aware that there were a number of people at the scene who didn't manage to pass on their details to an officer and I would urge them to come forward."

Police closed off Morecambe Road causing long delays, and traffic was being diverted along Torrisholme Road, but the road re-opened a few hours later.

A FIAT Punto "blew up" on Greyhound Bridge as it was stuck in tailbacks following the Summersgill Road incident.

The car engine fire happened at around 4.10pm. Fire crews extinguished the blaze and no-one was hurt.

That's very sad indeed.

As a cyclist I know how enclosed that section of road feels when there's such a wide and largely unused pavement alongside that could be made a cycle lane.

Harsh time for the poor driver and folks on the bus that probably saw it happen. RIP
