in laymans terms its like being sat in a bar and everyone being told there is a smoking ban, but them three sat over there are alright, they can smoke.

I thought it was more about cutting down on non-biodegradeable landfill?

Plastic bags on land or in the sea do so much damage to the worlds wildlife.

I can guarantee that our Doris will never be caught out more than once.
She always manages to remember to go out with money and/or a plastic card in her pocket, so taking a couple of re-usable bags will quickly become habit.

We don't have a car either, so nearly everything has to be manhandled from the shop.

Personally I hate seeing litter on our streets, including dog muck.

Absolutely. Those lantern things, and balloons should be banned too.

I agree, if the step in the right direction keeps your shoes clean, it's a good thing.

Agree entirely.

We had some idiot neighbour hammer on our door the other week as one of these idiotic things had landed in our garden and continued to burn away merrily on landing in the plants.

if they charge you 5p for a plastic bag, asked them for a plain one! if they can't provide a plain one then charge them 5p for advertising! :)

I've been into both ASDA and Tesco at Fulwood this lunchtime whilst on my lunch break.

Neither of the shops had ANY plastic bags hanging on their self scan machines.

At ASDA, they were going round selling Bags For Life.....!

According to a leading daily newspaper, it won't be long before all the supermarket trolleys and wire baskets have been thieved!

10p each, and once it reaches the end of it's usefulness you swap it one-for-one for free.

Although it isn't law most retailers are giving 100% of money from bag sales to charity.

in the mid 00s our council tax almost doubled over night thanks to the EU, making us recycle and separate things, into separate bins, putting more work and time onto Dustbin Wagons, hence why council tax shot right up buying more wagons and employing more staff, aswell as companys coming over from the EU taking over at salt air, and taking the piss with prices

and they wonder why people dump rubbish, having to apply for permits to get rid of house hold stuff, like old sofas and chairs etc etc.

give me good old land fill and cheaper council tax anytime.

Morrisons trolleys are thieved all too easily now since they withdrew the need for a pound coin or a trolley token to use them.

See many a trolley scattered over town.

My new favourite, The Daily Mash of course...

One caveat about using re-useable bags. Be careful to keep specific bags for meat, poultry and fish and especially not use them for vegetables. Otherwise there could be an outbreak of campylobacter, salmonella and other enteric infections.

It's a good start, and the next step should be to hammer all fast food/drink outlets with a litter tax.

5p Per bag.

Apparently the bag charge has been in force in the rest of the UK for several years, and even now the new rule in England is only a watered down affair.
