Didn't Mansfield Town last season do a "Pay What You Want/Can Afford" match?

How about doing one of those with say a minimum cost to be paid?

Exactly. If you don't buy the Visitor and don't listen to The Bay, you wouldn't even know we had a club let alone in L2. As for going out to schools, it seems they constantly do the same few local schools year after year. Doing the same thing all the time is pointless when it comes to marketing. You need to be doing different things to try to target different audiences.

Clearly putting all their efforts into the corporate side of things. But what about the football side of things? Who's in charge of getting more punters in the terraces?

Why aren't they contacting all the lapsed season ticket holders and offering them a discounted half season ticket to get them back in January? They surely have all the addresses and probably even email addresses so could be done very cheaply, especially given all the staff they seem to employ these days.

Am I alone in finding the radio match reports and Jim's interviews too downbeat and negative?

I was listening to Jim's post match interview 2-3 weeks ago after an away game, and they'd just won a good entertaining game, but if you were only half listening (as many non MFC fans would be), he made it sound like we'd lost - going on about poor referee decisions, injuries, low funds, etc, barely mentioning our goals and the win! He has a very flat voice which never sounds uplifting and enthusiastic.

The Bay's dour reports can often be similar, again, after a win, going on about poor recent performances, etc., - for god's sake, stick to the good news after we've won, and leave out the excuses for what went wrong previously! Such a difference against the upbeat Barrow reports by Amy (I think that's her name) which make it sound uplifting and entertaining.

Amy Scarisbrick.

An EXCELLENT reporter on The Bay and Tweeter too with her coverage of local sports and interviews.

Superb stuff :D

Everythings gone to pot since the sign on the bridge in Morecambe and Asda went

I bet if we bumped a similar thread from the last few seasons we'd all be saying the same thigns

- target students
- posters here there and everywhere
- discounted one off matches

All been tried, and all failed.

How many of the people suggesting posters are offering to help distribute them?

Everyone of these promotions has a cost attached to it, and if the associated cost outweighs the extra revenue coming in, there's no point in doing it.

The question isn't really "why aren't the club doing this that or the other", it's more "is there any point?" given that anything the club tries is met with shattering indifference by the town.

I don't want to piss on anyone's chips, but it's surprising how many marketing experts support Morecambe when it comes to these types of threads. To insinuate that the people in the posts don't know what they're doing smacks of both ignorance and arrogance.

Since the club moved to the Globe, it HAS invested a significant amount of revenue in advertising and promotion - admitedly, it was mostly when we moved but we've been in league 2 for several years now, mostly we end up mid table and we're hardly playing attractive teams each week - for the average person interested in football, they may feel they get more value out of their Sky subscription where they can have wall to wall football all weekend than spend a cold Tuesday night at the Globe - if we take away our supporters blinkers for a bit - none of us are really interested in Lancaster City, and if Morecambe suddenly disappeared would we all head over to Giant Axe?

Crowds have fallen - we got a bump when we were doing well at the top of the Conference, and a bump when League 2 was a novelty - now we're back to the hardcore, most of whom were probably turning up when we were a mid table conference team.

There is a finite amount of support in the town, and there are only ever going to be so many who turn out to see us play Crawley on a cold evening when there's nothing on the line.

Sky has done for the time when people supported their local team because they were local. They were the days when there was hardly any football on TV, so going to see your local team was about the only time you could actually see football - I don't think there's any substitute for going to a match, but I can see why some people prefer to watch Man Utd and Real Madrid of a weekend than come and watch Morecambe.

But, whilst I'm on it, shame on the club for cocking up the bar and then allowing the Hurley flyer to build beside the Globe. Every quid spent there is a quid that should have been spent at our club.

Same goes for the failed gym we had when the Globe opened.

That failed miserably and closed whilst LA3, literally just over the bridge, booms.

Agreed , the gym was just a white elephant. The "Globe Grill" also is another under-used asset.

With regards to the attendances , anything that brings in money that you wouldn't normally have received is worth trying.

Have we tried offering cheap match tickets to season ticket holders of other clubs that live in Morecambe , Carnforth Lancaster ? If they produced their season tickets at the shop let them purchase discounted tickets. This would be "new" money. There are probably hundreds of people in the area with season tickets at PNE , Blackpool , Man Utd , Liverpool , Leeds etc

Everything will be fine, we are now entering into the final year of our self sufficient break even plan...

I assume in a years time, the Chinese will have moved in to the houses next door, the Stadium renamed, the Globe Bar & Grill given a new lease of life, the new facilities up and running behind the Omega Stand, the new office block will be up and running along the North Terrace, all the boxes will be sold, the Away End will be full and open every game and the mound will have gone

thats a good shout, i never bothered last year with a season ticket, aswell as others i know who have not been re contacted, and they should still have your details on computer.

ie. like sky tv when you leave them, there straight back on to you offering all sorts of attractive deals to get you back as a paying customer

needs discussing because they(MFC) will be reading this thread, and some even take things personal, and get their knickers in a twist.

I don't think any one will be george, and maybe thats the problem, I breifly met the new commercial manager, introduced to me by a director, he ''had heard of shrimpsvoices'', but hadn't got round to looking at it, it might seem small fry to the club, but given that our attendances are ''small fry'' anyway everybody's input should be considered, otherwise we will eventually go back to non league football.

Reading through this, there are suggestions, some good, some not so good, that could be implemented, I think dialogue with an organised group of fans would help, no disrespect to FCOM, but there seems to be scant regard for them from the club, value for money plus better facilities need to be key to success, because at the moment, keeping existing fans is a bigger issue than gaining new ones!!

yes, its as if some fans are looking for the slightest excuse to throw the towel in, so to speak.

an hardcore of 1500 fans a few seasons ago at the globe, is steadily dropping.

Or you could look at it the other way around to say that it would be relatively cheap and easy to treat the existing loyal supporters a little better so as to reduce the number of reasons for them to become disillusioned and drift away. It is well known in business that it's cheaper to keep a customer than to get a new customer.

Unfortunately, MFC seems to rely on negative emotional blackmail to try to attract people to watch the matches. Jim whinging about low attendances in his radio interview is a classic example - it will achieve absolutely nothing as it's negative - a classic marketing "fail" in what was a brilliant marketing opportunity due to a good home win and a winning streak with goals galore!"

Same with local pubs saying they're closing because people aren't going in. "Some" pubs are reopening or relaunching themselves and seem to be doing fine - usually because of a good product and good marketing - i.e. providing what people want and shouting it from the roof-tops!

Marketing is about positives. The image has to be that it's worthwhile and enjoyable to come down to the Globe - if they try to force people to come on the "use it or lose it" emotional blackmail approach they're going to fail because people just don't respond to negativity.

Jim is clearly a great motivator on the pitch so I wish he would show the same kind of motivation in his interviews, to help motivate the locals to come down and support the club. I sincerely doubt he is negative with the players, so why is he like that with the media? I just don't get it.

It is, as you say,all about creating POSITIVE VIBE, giving fans something to crow about, instead of moan about, like " hi dave, good weekend?'' , ''not really, crap game, lost again, no pies left, I swear that club treats us fans like mugs!"' etc, as opposed to, "' yes great ta, went to watch footy, 7 goal thriller, nice pie and a pint at half time, with a coke for my lad, cost? , oh ,only £25 quid, good do!!

The trouble with football is it's too short. You pay your money to get in and two hours later your on your way out. What about some pre or post match entertainment. I've seen a post on here about a club with pre match entertainment in a marquee, was it Plymouth? If there was a cover behind the Omega there could be something like that there, maybe a band or something. How about a warm up man to get the crowd going before the game, get some chants going and lift the atmosphere? If the whole experience lasted longer and had some guaranteed fun then surely more people would come.
