I lived/worked in Paris for 4 years in the 1990s.

One of the first things I noticed was the very high visible presence of police on the streets. To the outsider, it looks as though they are always waiting for something to kick-off.

They can be quite an intimidating sight, even when all around is calm and serene.

If you ever need assistance from a French policeman, don't address him '...pardon Monsieur Poulet!', in exactly the same way as it's wise not to seek the attention of a French waiter by calling him 'Garcon'. The result of the latter might result in a dish of hot French onion soup over your lap.
