Unfortunately Jimbo used Padraig in roles that he was unhappy in. Maybe if Jim had played him as an out and out Centre Forward rather than try to use him in a variety of positions with little success then his scoring potential would have been of greater use to us.

Agree entirely. He had relatively few starts, usually coming on as an impact sub, and often playing in a midfield position (usually when Jim took off the midfielders and flooded the pitch with forwards) and often playing midfield behind Jack Sampson up front. I did a spreadsheet for one of the last two seasons and Podge came out as scoring the most goals per minute on the pitch (I'll try to find it and post the detail) ahead of Kev and little Jack. He also scored some important goals when we really needed to win a game. I always thought of him as a grafter, never one for just hanging around waiting for the ball to come to him unlike little Jack. As to whether Jim was right to let him go, probably not if Jim intended to play him upfront, but definitely right to let him go if Jim planned to continue to use him midfield.

5 goals from open play last season in the league from 17 starts (14 of them as a CF according to www.transfermarkt.co.uk) and 20 sub appearances. 3 penalties scored and one missed (vs Pompey at home in a 2-2 draw).

He was an honest pro, but looked a yard short of pace IMO.

He is doing very well at Grimsby, but I think that might be reflective of the drop in standard. He also wasn't prolific during his only other spell in League Two at Accrington.

To my mind, Barky is Amonds replacement and has more potential in the long term.... still waiting for the £2million transfer fee from Spurs to land though!

From what I have seen of him Barky is a bit of an oddball as unlike most other players he doesn't seem to have a "best position".He wins headers, and indeed Bazza targets him from goal kicks,has the pace and eye for goal (Portsmouth etc) yet also the vision of a central midfielder (Jacks goal v York) and able to play in defensive role (How many other strikers can play as wing back?)
Still, as the saying goes, a good player can play anywhere.I wonder if he's any good in net if Bazza gets hurt (maybe that's why Tommo has left!!!!!!).

Personally I like to see him wide with some one playing the ball into the gaps for him to chase as in against Portsmouth/AFC where his pace was lethal.
PS not hijacking the thread.Amond imo would not replace Barky in the team, nor I suspect any other regular starter.

Would give us an option with Miller in a 4/4/2, or when Miller isn't performing/injured.
But hindsight is marvellous as we are where we are.

Article on podge in the daily mail today, brilliant write up on him saying he's more prolific than messi and ronaldo at the minute and has championship clubs monitoring him along with league 1 and 2 clubs, being tipped as the next Jamie vardy so well done jimbo you got this one right in releasing him well done

I believe he has found his level at Vanarama league.
As for Vardy and Messi, they have pace, the one thing that really held Podge back, for me.
He's a good player, even at our level he could still do a job, however the management did release him as we had Tom B in the pipeline alongside Redshaw, Mullin and Ellison at the time. Then we drafted in Shaun Miller as a wee Jack replacement. Would anyone seriously swap Podge for Shaun, or Tom B???
Even our club clairvoyants couldn't have forecast what has happened, so for me, your comments are silly like!!

Ellison, devitt and Barky on the wings. Murphy n Fleming or wildig CM, still got our 3 best players this season in the side (Miller Barky devitt) plus another goal machine in there too in Amond.

Yet another example that if you play a player in his correct position you get the best of him.

Our loss......Grimsby's gain....and going forward Padraig's gain in that he will almost certainly secure a better contract than at The Globe, or Grimsby.

If he keeps on scoring CC then there's no doubt we'll see him in league 2 next season if he doesn't get snapped up by someone in a higher league as its his goals that are giving Grimsby a promotion charge at the minute
