Dryathlon January Cancer Fundraiser - Signed MFC shirt

Dryathlon January Cancer Fundraiser - Signed MFC shirt

Postby morecambewba » Sun Jan 31, 2016 10:35 pm

Some of you may remember Morecambe fan Paul Carter nominated me to be a guest of honour and lead the team out as part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Day 2 years ago.Two and half years since diagnosis and op and so far all tests clear. I am working normally, going to the gym on a regular basis and getting plenty of football in!!
To remind you i had no symptoms and no family history of cancer.. But i was having regular blood tests for cholestrol each year. Due to a chest infection and lack of breath (something that came and went and no explanation for)my doctor decided to test for everything. The test in december 2013 showed my psa was a little higher than normal. I went onto active surveillance with 3 monthly tests and 6 months later i was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The op was a success and 2 weeks after the op i was standing on the terraces watching morecambe beat rochdale 1-0 and enjoying a mfc chicken pie!!
I put a message on this board for men over 50 to think about getting a psa test and i believe some did. but since that time i have come across a few men in their forties who have been diagnosed. so if you are in this age group ,or know someone who does , i strongly advise to have this test. Its free at your local surgery . as this cancer is common amongst men it is worth doing and if it is caught early then it can be treated successfully

Last month a friend of mine asked me if i would like to take part in the Cancer Research Fundraising Dryathlon in January. No alcohol during the whole of January!! We decided to set a target of £400 but we reached that by jan 10th. So we upped the target by £200 a time and the pledges kept coming in. Our aim is at present £1300 and we have £1180.
Today is the last day of the dryathlon, and just as we were starting to dream of a pint, we decided to carry on until we got to £1500.

Apart from sponsors we have acquired some items from football clubs we follow or have contact with...include Morecambe FC. Mark Dixon has kindly provided an autographed home first team shirt(large size) to help us raise more money. So the shirt is open to offers up with a deadline of midday friday 5th February. I will deliver the shirt personally or post it if the top bidder lives in another part of the country. The bid can be paid directly into our justgiving account

Thanks for reading this and please pass the word arounn about psa testing

the friday midday deadline has passed and therefore Dazza is the top bidder. Dazza i have sent you a message but not sure if you have received it as its still showing in my outbox and wont move!!
Thanks for outsider too for his bid.
also the advertising of this fund raising brought in £30 from shrimpsfans..thanks to all of you who donated
we have reached £1403 and with funds still coming in we should reach our present £1500 aim by sunday. WBA and FC United have donated items which are being bid for at the moment. In fact we think the final figure will be about £1600.
we are still staying dry until we reach the £1500 mark....unless we decide to continue!! we never expected such a response but it has been worth it.
great to see so many views for this important topic.
thanks again to everyone

Yes, well done Mark & the club. They get plenty of grief for things that aren't done well, but not always the recognition of what they do well. Part of the community.

So how did that work out then?
