It's funny you should post this as I was only discussing this exact topic the other day with a friend of mine.
They seem to be happening more and more now than ever before. I was considering the grounds played on today compared to years ago as an issue, there used to be a lot more give in pitches and the general play was a lot slower, my thinking was that the pitches now are so fast/light and the game is so demanding that it is leading to more injuries sustained during training and matches.
ACL injury is another one that we are seeing more and more which results from usually a sharp twist of the knee area.
I'm not sure how much the pre match warm ups may have changed over the years, you'd like to think with the science available now that they would have the answers available to prevent these injuries instead of them becoming more common.
