O/T The New Road

O/T The New Road

Postby seasonsinthesun » Tue Mar 29, 2016 3:14 pm

Thinking back to Good Friday and all the traffic delays on the M6 and the delayed kick off, would it have made any difference if the new bypass road had been operating with regard to easing the congestion at all?
And following on from that, will the local traffic congestion be generally eased by the existence of the new road?
I know this may have been discussed before, but as the road will supposedly be opening later this year I am wondering if anyone has more recent thoughts on the road now it is closer to completion.

Isn't most of the M6 congestion currently due to the junction works, for the new road? So yes, it will improve things.

Not much improvement with all those bladdy traffic lights, at the moment there are 26 already erected on Morecambe Rd . I would have thought a big roundabout would have been better.

I will give Kim Kardashian a call...
The new road should certainly improve the carnage that we suffer on a daily basis and will be better for fans coming to the football ground, but will probably bring more drivers out on the usual routes at busier times, so will probably cancel itself out after a while.
Asda roundabout will just be as busy with people trying to get to the by pass

I tweeted them and asked the question abut the roundabout apparently it would have needed to be a much larger roundabout and there wasn't enough space.

The traffic is going to queue up even more from there to asda roundabout as if there isn't enough traffic lights/crossings down Morecambe rd.

I think for traffic going Morecambe - Lancaster and back it won't make any difference hopefully getting to the Mway will be easier and it might take the trucks off Greyhound bridge. I do wonder especially at night if the trucks will still come off at J34 if it is less miles.

Personally I don't think there will be much improvement to local traffic :?: but while they were at building the road why not put another bridge across the Lune at somewhere near snatchems to improve traffic to and from Lancaster.

Well if they had put the right by-pass in there would have been a link road on to the quay , then all those people living down Quay Rd wouldn't have to go round the one-way system to get home and neither would the HGV's getting to the Lune Ind Est.

The road would have had to go further than the Quay and the nutty professors , Green Party and newts stopped the route to Hampson Green.

I know it would go to Hampson Green but there would have been a road off the by-pass onto the Quay area . I think the newts were a smoke screen ,more like the lardy da's from Aldcliffe would have had there view across the estuary impeded. ;)

The Greens nearly played a blinder and got the road stopped entirely. They got the Western Bypass to be out of the question for legal reasons, then played your rather limited ex-MP, to try and block the Northern Bypass because she wanted the illegal, non-existent Western route, almost resulting in neither and a return to ox & cart as the Green's preferred method of transport in the area!

To be fair, most of the time, an ox & cart would be the quickest way of getting from Morecambe to Lancaster!

IMO it looks like there will be a lot of congestion at the college where the new road meets Morecambe Road and all those traffic lights.
I am not totally convinced that lorries will always use the road as they may still go over Skerton Bridge if it's less mileage to the motorway.
Local traffic between Lancaster and Morecambe will not use the new road so still plenty of traffic on Skerton and Greyhound bridges as is the case now.
It would be interesting to know how many vehicles other than lorries would be coming off the M6 to get straight through to Morecambe/Heysham/Torrisholme and therefore using the new road.

I said before the planning really got underway, they should build a spur off the M6 at the university. That would stop all the university traffic going through Galgate and traffic from Morecambe would go on to the M6 rather than through Lancaster.

Totally agree Keith.
The Uni having its own little junction would make a lot of sense.
If I drive to Preston heading south through Scotforth it's busy until the Uni when a lot of cars turn off to the Uni.
They would probably go on the new road, then on to the motorway then off at the Uni "junction"
BUT they won't do it.

But then people would sneak through the Uni exit to get to that side of town!!
And talking to lorry driver mate, he reckons they will use the bypass to get to Heysham as there are prospectively 10 sets of lights/crossings between M6 junction and the Morecambr Rd junction, whereas the other way there will be none.
But he is a lorry driver!! :D

Why not do away with the one way system? I think it's worth serious consideration...

The link road is less mileage as it pretty much runs east-west, whereas travelling via Skerton Bridge involves a surprisingly V-shaped route.

Its all very well portraying the Greens and any other opposition as a group of wacky 'anti progress' Luddite types ; but there has to be an antidote to the constant call and need to build new , wider roads, bridges etc. I don't represent any political party but have my concerns about the effectiveness of the new road when it arrives.
I commute to Preston daily by car , so its in my interest to seek and support a solution and obviously new roads are ONE way of easing the current madness getting in and out of Lancaster/Morecambe at times.
I would imagine there will be a number of posts following this about ill informed I am and hints that I should go away and read back to the 1960's proposals for a similar road and examples of how INSANE some of the Green and other politicians are ; in essence do my homework first;haven't the time to be honest.
I'm simply voicing concerns that other measures of traffic control, particularly getting cars off the road. Park & Ride , How about a congestion charge for Lancaster !!! I can never understand why everyone's trying to get into Lancaster ?

Need a bridge from the end of new quay road with all the new builds down there to link up with the roundabout on mellishaw lane. Why anyone would want to live on there I don't know currently, bad access and built on marsh land...

I think new road won't make a blind bit of difference to traffic sadly. Needed both Western and northern bypasses but it will never happen.

It'll surely make getting to junction 34 from Heysham easier, won't it?

I hope the new link is not connected up to the Marsh. That would clog up the new bypass with all the traffic from the Lune Industrial Estate etc. Let them try for their own road and see if it takes 60 odd years :!:

I think the main issue is that people don't want to get into Lancaster, they want to get through it or past it. People living in Morecambe/Heysham who want to get to the Uni or RLI or Preston, don't have any choice but to go through Lancaster. Same with lorries between Heysham and the M6.

Congestion charges won't work if there's no alternative route. Park and ride won't work for people who don't want to go into the Lancaster centre.

Personally, I think the new road will make a massive difference, especially to relieve Skerton and Greyhound bridges. No, it won't do much for "local" traffic, but that's not it's purpose. And anyway, locals will still benefit as the bridges etc will be a lot clearer so local journeys into Lancaster should be easier too.
