Congratulations to podge an Grimsby. Although I'd very surprised to see him at the globe next season. Loads of talk of a few league 1 clubs trying to sign him hope he gets the move he deserves !

I understand Pompey are looking at signing Podge. Suspect our manager's assessment that he had found his level in the non-league Vanarama is way off the mark!!

Its kind of traditional to place bets BEFORE the match kicks off Chris, not near the end

I am happy to discuss a bet on Amonds next wembley appearance :D

I am surprised at that. I would have said Grimsby were a bigger club.

It will be interesting to see how he does in League 2 when played as a striker.

Sideways move? Haven't seen anything particularly impressive from Hartlepool in recent times to suggest they will do any better than Grimsby this season.

Having scored all those goals, you would have thought Grimsby would offer more than a 1 year deal. Hartlepool have offered 2, which makes a big difference to the player.

Here's a breakdown of Podges goals for Grimsby last season.

Of his 30 league goals he scored 21 of them against sides that finished in the bottom half of the table.

His other 9 goals break down as follows:

2 vs Barrow (11th)
5 vs Woking (12th)
1 vs Eastleigh (7th)
1 vs Dover (5th) (penalty)

So that means he managed to score 1 goal from open play all season against the top 10 in the division which probably tells you why Grimsby weren't willing to commit themselves to a long term deal on high wages.

I can remember great goals he scored for us against Fleetwood (winner) Chesterfield (winner) and Portsmouth (3rd in a 3-1 win) and all these were top sides so you can make stats look however you want.

Not really, they are what they are. He clearly struggled to replicate his goal scoring form against the better sides in the division, you can't argue with that.

Well I would have had him back and he certainly gave 100% every match which Miller IMHO didn't.

I didn't want him to leave at the time, thought the 10 ish goals a season he was good for whilst not being the main striker would be hard to replace but Barkhuizen has proven me wrong on that front.

I certainly wouldn't have him back considering the amount of money he'll likely be demanding off the back of the season he's just had when he turns 29 this season.

Miller is a year older than Podge yet everyone is disappointed he's gone.

Its all academic because neither of them is coming back. I am hoping Jim is going to unearth some rough diamonds.

That's because Miller scored more goals in a season than any other Morecambe player in the Football League aside from Phil Jevons whereas Podge was a bit part player in a team where he was overshadowed by Jack Redshaw.

To suggest that Miller and Podge are comparable is nonsense.

How many of Millers were penalties ?

Take away October and one other good month and he disappeared off the radar !

Podge scored more goals in proportion to time on pitch, and not in his favoured position. Miller was a regular player and got more time on the pitch. Podge was definitely a harder worker and scored some crucial goals when it really mattered.

One thing that nobody can deny is that in the last 2 close seasons we have let go (for whatever reasons) 2 very successful strikers and it will be hard to find an adequate replacement this time around if we are to remain competitive this coming season.

Wonder what happened to the lad Stockton on loan from Tranmere who could well have been a good signing..... :?: :?: :?:

UPDATE: Looks as though we've lost Stockton to Wrexham....

I would of thought scoring 5 goals against you might of slightly impressed you. Only joking I know what you mean but don't be surprised to see us being more of a threat this year. As for Grimsby being a bigger club. Well they have done better in the past if that's how you judge bigger and they do get slightly better crowds but I'm sure we would if we were up near the top. I know one thing they certainly wouldn't take over 500 to places like Plymouth for meaningless games.
