Personally, I think the new road will make a massive difference, especially to relieve Skerton and Greyhound bridges. No, it won't do much for "local" traffic, but that's not it's purpose. And anyway, locals will still benefit as the bridges etc will be a lot clearer so local journeys into Lancaster should be easier too.


Hopefully that is where we will see the benefit. Take the articulated lorries, travelling from M6 to Heysham Port or in to Morecambe out of the existing Lancaster traffic and HOPEFULLY it will be easier & less congested for local traffic too. Used the new south-bound slip road to join the M6 today. Much better, even with the traffic restrictions still on it. Although did look odd on the sat nav as it took me through fields! :lol:

its about time, more options the better.


i would also like a toll bridge at the bottom of the Marsh industrial Estate going over the river Lune to link up to the heysham bypass like planned in the other bypass plan from Galgate at £1 a time to cross untill a loan to build the thing is paid off.

those not wishing to pay, then dont use it.

Another benefit of the new bypass is the remodelled motorway junction... which in my opinion is one of if not the worst junctions on the M6, particularly when joining to go north. I think I read on here that J34 in its current guise was never designed to be a permanent junction or handle the volume of traffic that it does at the moment. Working on Caton road you soon become all too aware the frequency of accidents at that junction and how quickly this backs up towards the one-way system.

The motorway junction on Caton Road at the minute and for the past few weeks, with no traffic lights at all, is brilliant. I can get from Scale Hall to Blackburn in a morning without stopping and no traffic at all after Skerton Bridge.

To be fair we wouldn't have got this road or any other road with Smith as the MP.

The road was nowt to do with either MP. It was county council as highways authority that fought for it and delivered it. It would have arrived whoever was MP and whatever they thought of it

And after years of stasis it was the Labour leader of Lancaster City Council who forced the debate to be reopened by joining with the Chamber of Commerce to back a Northern Route. All some three years before some alien life form was elected for Morecambe.

The bulk of the money around £123 million had to be found by the Conservative Government , the County Council contribution was much less. Like him or not David Morris was prominent in lobbying the Transport Secretary for this road.

I know he's smug but I know from my lobbying of him about the new road that he did push it with the Transport Dept.
Smith was dead set against anything apart from the Western Route and everyone knows that would never have happened.

That last bits right but, as I said, neither MP had anything to do with it. It was top of the road agenda for Lancashire highways for years under Labour and Tory government, the cash was always going to be there, the only thing delaying it was the process of objections and appeals. Morris just happened to be in place at the time, knew it was going to happen and milked it for all it was worth. Made all the right noises, claimed credit and is still milking it. Absolutely nowt whatsoever to do with him.

I agree that David Morris had little to do with the road being built, but Geraldine Smith had a lot to do with it being delayed. She was bloody useless as an MP for the area. The Tories could have put up a cat in a blue tie and it would have been an improvement on Smith who was either a closet Green or a fully paid up member of the MBI's (are they still going?)

Although I agree with your comments regarding Geraldine's worth as an MP ,Keith, I was genuinely wondering what has happened to her, I remember her before her polical career and always found her very affable and single minded about her politics, she appeared to be seduced by the whole MP thing though, when appointed, and was a ''Blair bimbo'' , a sadly missed opportunity, I hope she is in good health.

I think David Morris should be able to invite who he wants to open the road; he deserves it.
