At the gala draw the player sponsors board was setup as follows:

1 Roche
2 Wakefield
3 McGowan
4 Kenyon
5 Winnard
6 Edwards
7 New Midfielder
8 Murphy
9 Barkhuizen
10 Molyneux
11 Ellison
12 Mullin
13 New Forward
14 Conlan
15 Wildig
16 New Midfielder
17 Fleming
18
19
20 New Defender
21 New Goalkeeper
22 New Forward

Stockton wasn't on that list so he'll take one of the new forward slots which leaves:

New Goalkeeper
New Defender
New Midfielder x 2
New Forward

That would suggest another 5 signings. Also strange that #18 and #19 were missed out on the list, are these being kept spare for this years academy graduates?

Who was it that posted about a squad of only 16.... :?: :?:

My main concerns based on last season's problems are still regarding midfield and forwards.
The signings of Wakefield and Winnard are great defensively, but I just hope we have enough to compete in the midfield area, which is always key to a successful team.
We have Murphy on the way back, which is good news, but there must be a doubt as to whether he can get through a full season with the injuries he has had.
Apart from him, it's same again so far with Fleming, Kenyon, Molyneux and Wildig as the other main midfielders, all of which had their ups and downs last season, although I thought Kenyon was showing good things at times.
Up front, it's just Ellison, Mullin and Stockton at the moment which is pretty lightweight to trouble many tough League Two defences, although I thought Stockton looked good last season, and gives us some physical presence which is important.
Barkhuisen shows flashes of great play, but needs to be played in his best position, which IMO is not as a right winger or wing back, but more central, maybe with Stockton as a front two.
So hopefully there are still more signings to come before the kick off which is now just over four weeks away.

I would have Barky playing off a target man (Stockton) allowing him the freedom to use his pace to collect flick ons or if dropping in behind let Stockton make the run drawing the C/Hs leaving Barky to drive at goal.
Those two could work well together if given the service ;with no Dev its time for Wildig to step up as playmaker.

Are we talking someone we would actually know who had a half decent career at the top level or is it more a case that he made one sub appearance as a youngster ala Kevin Ellison playing at Old Trafford in the Premier League for Leicester.

It's not who I was thinking.

Apologies!

Player I thought has signed again at his club from last season.

Player in my thoughts is a mate of a work colleague who is godfather to his kids.

Back to the drawing board!!!!

Here's a guess.

David Raven:

Played for Liverpool and Inverness, from the Wirral and currently out of contract. He's a right back though, not a centre back.

EDIT: Scrap that, I see he's signed a new deal after initially not being offered one.

For me a midfield has to be both creative and defensive. Fortunately we are OK creatively but defensively and in winning midfield aerial battles we are particularly poor. it's been the same for every season of late and it appears that nothing has been done to rectify the short comings. Now it may be that the management team don't see it that way but for me the midfield is the key area on the pitch. Win the battles in midfield and your well on the way to getting 3 points. Our current midfield is too lightweight and loose out on too many occasions for us to be a team challenging for promotion. Last season goals against column showed that the protection that the defence get from midfield goes missing on too many occasions. Something that needs putting right as a matter of urgency.

To be fair to Jim, he did sign Peter Murphy last Summer who we would have envisioned doing all the defensive side of things. You can hardly lay the blame at Jim's door for the fact he's been injured for pretty much the whole time he's been a Morecambe player.

...but there appeared no attempt to get a loan deal for a suitable replacement at anytime over the season and that lead in my opinion to our disastrous defensive record, something that a strong and competitive midfield could have helped reduce in terms of goals against.

Well that didn't last long he got a trial at a better club won't be coming back. It was Gavin gunning previously of Blackburn rovers and Dundee United. Famously known for picking the ball up and walking off the pitch in the SPL last season and then getting sacked. Not sure if he played any games in the premiership for Blackburn either http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footba ... efeat.html
