Visitor front page

Visitor front page

Postby Brian C » Wed Aug 17, 2016 7:31 am

Really disappointed with the Visitor front page today.
Lots of people in work asking me why Morecambe fans attacked a Blackpool officials car!!!
Are the Visitor attempting to keep fans away from the Globe?

The first paragraph on the paper gives totally the wrong impression, and I have had to explain in detail that it was in fact Blackpool fans, and the reason they hate Oyston.

I posted this below in the other thread about The Visitor also Brian as yesterdays front page has really pi$$ed me off.

My earlier post:

Today's Visitor:

"Trouble began after the match when a car carrying senior blackpool officials was vandalised outside the Shrimps Globe Arena ground."

At no point does our LOCAL paper say it was Blackpool fans who were the guilty party.

Any locals read the story, what assumptions will they jump to???

I've Tweeted The Visitor to ask why they didn't make it clear that is was Blackpool fans who were behind all this, but lo and behold, no reply.

My next move is a direct email to the reporter who penned the article.

Not happy.

If this was on the front page it definitely warrants a clarification article on the front page not hidden away somewhere.

I would be amazed if she was anywhere near the Globe Arena on Saturday.

This will have been written from tweets and other social media , lazy journalism.

This really needs to be taken up by the club and a front page apology should be on next weeks Visitor.

I agree entirely which is why I'm pestering them on Twitter and emailing them directly.

Without apology or clarification it could put people off coming.

I saw the front page as I went to get petrol this morning. The paper was displayed prominently both outside as well as on the counter. Big over the top, out of context headline and an introduction shaming fans for attacking a vehicle (Oyston's) and Blackpool fans going on to cause trouble in Lancaster.

The Visitor and the journalist Gemma Sherlock should be ashamed of themselves. They've completely misrepresented the club, the fans and the town to try and sell a few copies of their dwindling. The damage to the club is done without people even buying the paper, the headline is extremely misleading.

I really hope the club do something to distance themselves from this and release a statement clearing our fans of any wrongdoing.

The only reporter The Visitor had at Saturday's game was from Oldham....

An apology is definitely needed here from our illustrious "local" newspaper....

Disgrace. Thats it for me now; I don't care if they sponsor the club, whatever they pay its not worth it for the substandard reporting and headlines that could potentailly damage the club #DontBuyTheVisitor

Get that trending in the Twittersphere and I suspect a clarification will come quite quickly - they won't want the bad publicity for themselves.

Lets hope all "tweeting" shrimps can send Ms Sherlock some tweets showing their displeasure.

It may have more effect to send tweets to the editor if we have his/her email address.

Just posted this on the Morecambe Visitor Facebook page. It'll probably get removed!

"Absolutely disgusting headline this week inferring Morecambe fans involved in trouble with Blackpool fans at the Globe Arena. No such thing happened. Blackpool fans were showing their displeasure with their chiarman and Owen Oyston. Cheap, misleading and damaging headline by a reporter that doesn't appear to care about the truth!"

Morecambe Visitor, August 17th 2016

Tarnishing the name of the club & fans. Lazy journalism from 'our own' newspaper. Publishing the Blackpool Gazette report of the match (with obvious bias to Blackpool) under a Visitor headline was bad enough, but this is deliberately misleading.

I wonder who Ms Sherlock's sources were? Did she speak to anyone who actually witnessed this incident? Or made up story from police report & some Twitter comments, so left anything she didn't know, deliberately vague so the un-informed reader would fill in the gaps themselves?

Once upon a time, they lifted their stories directly from Shrimpsvoices, we must be slipping if she can't even be bothered coming here to see what's going on!

It's the story which implies it was MORECAMBE fans that trashed Oyston's car pi$$es me off.

Nothing could be further from the truth as it was Blackpool fans who did this, but nowhere in the story does Ms Sherlock make reference to this.

Also, the story implies "mass violence" broke out outside our ground too, which again, is absolute bollocks.

So many people will have read this garbage and thought "give The Globe a wide berth".

Like I say earlier on this thread, we need an apology from this rag.

I posted responses to their misleading story on-line. Have to say, they are very efficient when it comes to removing the comments. I wrote:

"Police also received reports that between approximately 5.25pm and 5.30pm on August 13 a car had been vandalised, as it left the ground on Christie Way, carrying several Blackpool Football Club senior officials".

Vandalised BY BLACKPOOL 'FANS' Gemma.
NO MORECAMBE FANS WERE INVOLVED IN THIS INCIDENT: Let's not have the facts get in the way of the front page story eh?

Read more at: http://www.thevisitor.co.uk/news/local/ ... -1-8069963

And:

"After the match some Blackpool "fans" attacked & vandalised the car Owen Oyston was in. Our daring reporter failed to mention this fact, that it was Blackpool against Blackpool in her front page 'scoop' that inferred that Morecambe fans were involved.

Dreadful reporting and I hope Morecambe FC & Morecambe fans receive an apology that is as prominent as the misleading headline that tarnishes our reputation as a family-friendly club".

Read more at: http://www.thevisitor.co.uk/news/local/ ... -1-8069654

Both comments were removed within minutes of posting them. Sadly, the inaccurate stories remain, probably because as far as The Visitor are concerned, they are factually correct, even if very misleading.

Exactly. She had implied Morecambe fans are scum, who attack officials of rival teams and fight with opposition fans. Implied it, but didn't actually write it. Basically, its filled a space without anything more than a phone call to the police station desk. No need for any follow up to validate the story, just pad it out and add a big headline. Then print the Blackpool version of the match report.

This group were drinking outside the Hurley Flyer after the game(presume same group who gained entry in home end and moved to berlin wall and left just after second morecambe goal)
Most in 40s and 50s and tried to intimidate morecambe fans passing by, especially about ten teenage morecambe fans. Really pathetic to see them wanting to fight lads up to 30 years younger than themselves.
Presume same group who attacked Oyston's car and then caused trouble in Lancaster.
Like everyone else I am angry about the report and will be sending an email to the reporter and her bosses.
If there is an apology it should be on the front page and not tucked away on an inside page as most papers do.
Apart from this incident caused by away fans 45 minutes after the game i thought it was a great atmosphere and credit to both sets of fans for exemplary behaviour. No mention of that i don't think.
