The shit ref database

The wonderfully named Mr A Conn (Alfie).

Two up at Dagenham gave a penalty in the 88th when one of their players accidentally fouled his own player. Then played 8 minutes of injury time when there was about 3 until they scored in the 97th.

Good shout Hornet on Jon Moss. The other was when he were threatened with relegation from the Conference and had a vital match away at Hereford, only for Dave McKearney (?) to be sent off for swearing in the fifth minute. Never know it before or since.

Guess who tomorrow's ref is... :?

Wasn't yesterday's ref Kevin Friend? I remember him having an absolute shocker when we played Rochdale some years ago. His reward for an abysmal performance was promotion to the Premiership!!

Erm, yes, well spotted!

Only saw the 2nd half yesterday but I didn't see anything from him to get wound up about. Maybe we didn't do enough to warrant that...

The ref had a decent game.

We needed a few more players to have decent games.

Yes, Michael Salisbury should be on the list. I thought he looked out of his depth last Saturday. Has he been promoted too soon?

Salisbury enemy number 1 after the Cheltenham game. Deadman abysmal. Yearby was also shocking. Bilo probably the worst of the lot. But long retired from the non-leagues I suspect. Tuesday night against Barnet - what was that all about? If you are going to be a sh*t Ref, be sh*t for both sides you buffoon!

Tuesday's referee David Coote is obviously going places. I see he is reffing the Championship game Barnsley versus Brighton on Saturday. Heaven help us.

Heaven help a referee who got the 2 big game changing decisions correct? It was a red and a pen, however 'soft' both were.

He got a number of potentially game changing decisions wrong- the stamp on Mullen, the wrestling hold on Edwards to name but two.

This is starting to sound like the other thread on 'crisis in reffing'.

Opinions split as we know. For me he was a pretty good ref who got most of it right. None will ever get 100% but he did not miss much. If we had a video of every incident we would perhaps then have something to discuss. All covered on the other thread.

I think this thread is the sort that can give social media a bad name. I wonder what it is like for those named to read the negative comments about them?

constructive suggestion. all those who feel the need to list 'shit refs' get the refs qualification, get a thorough understanding of the laws of the game (law 12 was the issue on the other thread) and spend a season reffing. then, if their name has not appeared on this database, come back and say what they think.

I may of course be wrong. Perhaps those who have contributed have the knowledge?

As the originator of the thread, all I'll say is that it's up to the moderators to remove or lock the thread as they see fit, which would be fair enough. This is, after all, a Morecambe forum and not a referees forum.

I'd be amazed if any of the refs mentioned, or their families, have ever visited this thread!

But it is positive that you're contributing an alternative point of view. I tend to have a similar view. I used to umpire hockey and found I became much more 'tolerant' of referees as a result! Also, when umpiring, I learned how few players knew the rules of the game. Similarly, how many players & fans don't know the laws of football. My favourite occasion was umpiring Barrow Vickers v Morecambe. In that league, each team provided one umpire. This was a top of the table clash. Within the first couple of minutes, Vickers attacked, entered the D and the player was fouled. I awarded a penalty flick. The routine (back then at least) was to say the words "I will ask you both if you are ready, then blow my whistle and you can take the flick. Are you ready keeper? ['Yes'] Are you ready striker? ['Yes'] then just before I blew, he took the strike, perfect flick in to the top corner. All the Vickers players turned and were celebrating. I blew the whistle and indicated a 16 yard hit to Morecambe. I could actually hear the Morecambe defenders talking to each other... "he's signalling a 16 yard hit", "Why is he signalling that?" "I don't know". At that he took the sixteen yard, straight up the pitch. It turned out there were three people on the pitch who knew the rule. Me, the Vickers player who took the hit and the Morecambe centre forward, who took the ball and legged it down the pitch. None of the Barrow players tried to tackle him, they didn't know what was going on! He went round the keeper and scored! The Barrow lad later said that as the Morecambe player ran off with the ball, he realised what had happened. I actually had to go over to the other umpire and explain it to him too. The Barrow players were furious! Their captain (who'd messed up) ended up stood in front of me, pushing his own players back to stop them getting to me. Their heads had gone and they never recovered. In the bar after the game, I was sat with their captain, with a rule book open at the page. Even after they'd read it, players were still arguing that I should have let him take the flick again and that it was a "stupid rule". Football fans are similar. The law that has seen us have multiple red cards is now being interpreted in a way that is different to ten years ago. No point us thinking that's wrong, it's how it is now. We need to know that. I'm amazed that we even appealed against the decision.

As long as the thread isn't too abusive, I'm comfortable that it can continue. It is about refs at Morecambe games and despite my comments at the top, I do think we're on the wrong end of more bad decisions than our oppositions!
