Going down?

Going down?

Postby Keith » Sun Apr 16, 2017 11:18 am

While not quite mathematically safe, it would be an incredible set of circumstances for us to actually go down now, so who will drop? We've more chance of being relegated than Leyton Orient have of staying up, so that's one down.

Newport are the only team in the relegation battle who've put together any positive results lately, with three 1-0 wins in the last three games. But they now face a run in of Plymouth, Accrington & Carlisle, three teams all chasing promotion. They'll be delighted if they can go in to the last game of the season still in with a chance of staying up.

Hartlepool have one point head-start on Newport and the same goal difference. While we saw the point we gained against them as a big one, halting our dreadful run of defeats, it may yet be a valuable point for Hartlepool too. Without it, they would now be in the bottom two. A run in that takes them to near-as-damn-it relegated Orient, nothing to play for Barnet, fellow strugglers Cheltenham before the last day away at Champions elect Doncaster, suggest that they may just survive before the last game.

Cheltenham have an odd run in. Nothing to play for Grimsby, battling for the play offs Blackpool, that relegation battle at Hartlepool before a last day trip to Portsmouth.

Yeovil? Probably just about safe? Possibly not. If Newport can pull off one shock win in their next three fixtures, Yeovil will be in real pressure. A run in against Crewe, Grimsby, Stevenage & Colchester suggests three of four fixtures against sides that have little to play for except pride & renewed contracts. That said, Colchester might still be in with a chance of the play offs by the time we reach the last game of the season? Suddenly, their relatively easy run in becomes a bit more challenging?

Could be a really interesting last day of the season if Newport can pick up a couple of points from their next three fixtures. Three teams ending up on 46 points? Someone relegated on goal difference or even goals scored? I'm just glad we're no longer under that pressure!

I still think we nned at least one more positive result to see us safe.

Our run in isn't that easy. Every team we play has a chance of making the play offs so no easy game which for me is just the way we would prefer it to be. We need to battle as do our opponents which hopefully will make it a very interesting run in.

No mention of Crewe and Crawley who are both below us as well?

Odds from Skybet to go down

Newport 10/11
Hpool 6/4
Chelt 5/1
Yeovil 16/1
Crawley 100/1
Morecambe 250/1

To be unbeaten in our two remaining home games should see us safe and finish the season with a much-needed dose of positivity.

I think Cheltenham will go down with Orient. I hope Hartlepool stay up because, like us, Jeff Stelling supports a "real" football team. I know that we are not safe yet but can anyone really see six teams getting past us with four games to go. The players should be a bit more relaxed for the final games and I wonder if Jimbo will give some of the younger players a run out

Doubt that will enter his equation until we get at least 2 more points.

Yes, but at the same point in the season, only three points separated 17th to 23rd. This season, eight points separate the same spread of teams. York were second from bottom on 45 points, this season 45 points would be 21st instead of 23rd.

Orient's game today is in jeopardy unless they can find medical cover to have in attendance at the match.

If Orient didn't complete the season how would that affect things ?

I'd hope that, even if they went to the wall and their results were abolished, only one club would be relegated with two coming up from the National League as usual, and that that one club going down wouldn't be us! Anyone care to work out the revised league table?

A very worrying read this about Leyton Orient.

No contact from club owner, wages for March not paid.

Sounds all too familiar...... :(

been following this, it's out of order this, it seems like the Owner is deliberately trying to make them bust just so he can develope Land around there for modern apartments.

also on Sky Sports slating this fit and proper owner test or what ever you call it, it's a joke and disrespectful to a football clubs history and memory.

don't know what the FL can do legally to stop owners from doing this dispite MPs sharing people's frustrations.

only positive with us, is any dodgy owner with hidden agenda can't touch our Land, we'll still have a home to play football on.

Barry Hearne owns the land and he told 5live a couple of weeks ago he isn't about to sell it to anyone. He felt sorry for the club but has no intention of returning as owner or chairman of it. At the time of the sale of the club he was happy with the new owners!!
Don't worry be happy!
