What about using a site like Kickstarter for this?

They take a 5% cut if you raise your target amount (plus a 3% payment processing charge) but charge nothing if you don't.

It might be a decent way to get people to put their money where their mouth is before you dive in and order, reducing the risk.

I'm now looking at other producers to reduce the unit cost.

When I've got that info I will post on SVs.

However I'm not in a position to finance the entire project and will be looking for others to assist with any monies provided towards the cost being refunded when the item is sold.

Ideally it would be excellent if some business who is VAT registered is prepared to back the project in full with their expenditure being refunded from sales.

I'm more thatn happy to manage the project but can't finance it in full. Sorry.

Pointless - if a business is VAT registered and so reclaims the VAT paid to the supplier, it will then have to account to HMRC for VAT on the amount it receives back from the Trust - even giving away stuff is liable for output VAT on the disposal. Just won't work, unless the business is going to engage in tax evasion!
