Shrimps Academy....going forward to the next level

'Our Cat 3 Academy has a very generous PL funding; just under £300k pa plus the club contributes more than the minimum required. This is currently the case and was the same under Peter Marsden's reign.'

The above has been lifted from the Stanley site and states that they received just under £300K from the PL.

I would assume that a similar amount was received by our club having recently progressed to Cat 3 Academy

Excellent if this has happened and recognition of the hard work undertaken by Drummie and others.

I think you are a little confused CC as we have progressed from a category 4 academy TO a category 3.

The academy which said it would work with the local league has now shafted local teams.
Local kids teams folding because of this and club has gone against what it promised.

Take young kids into a team and leave their mates is no way to help develop kids at grass roots

Think club needs to build bridges with local teams in the area and not go against us all as some of us fans actually run local kids teams and are not impressed with the attitude of MFC

Drummond is a joke!!!!!!!

How exactly has the clubs academy resulted in local teams folding?

Not saying you're wrong, just interested in the details.

Kids who sign up which I believe to be 20 per age group are not allowed to play for local teams meaning less kids eligible to play so teams have been folding
They promised to work with local teams but gone against that and now seem to do as they please

Short memories for a club in the shit last year

Having to use L&M college as no where to train

I'm a fan of club so this isn't just a rant from anyone not giving a damm

Have to say I agree with ispyshrimp my lads team has folded as a result of this progress as half his team are now academy signed and he will now not be able to play with his mates as he has for the last few years and we are now on the lookout for another team for him at very short notice for the league starting.

Great for the lads who have been signed heartbreaking for the ones left behind.

I do hope we see more of these academy players especially the local lads come through into the first team although I can't remember many getting much of a chance in recent years

Are the rules regarding academy football and who is able to play controlled by the FA and the club have to abide by their rules.

Not sure hence the question.

Interesting reading this as it throws up some parallels with our first team having to now play Premiership kids in the FLT.

Not quite sure why kids can't still play a bit of local league footy though as well as for the academy?

They have been playing for both for the last couple of years but now it's progressed to CAT3 they can only play for the academy teams not sure why though.

FA rules, enforced by the Lancashire FA, are that any child signed for a Cat 3 Academy or above can't play at local league level. The reason being that the Academy has to invest in coaching staff, facilities etc. and doesn't want their work diluted by a coach at another club giving them different advice.

I totally sympathise with the comments above (although the comment about Stewart Drummond is utterly stupid). Getting Category 3 status at this time of the year means that most teams who've lost players to Morecambe's academy have no way to find additional players. My team, Bowerham Juniors U11s has a 12 player squad, which was great for seven-a-side but now we progress to nine-a-side and we've lost one player to the Academy, which leaves us with just 11. It is the same for teams climbing up from U8s to U9s and U12s to U13s.

In our league I understand that Heysham Blue Star have folded, Westgate Wanderers and Westgate Rangers have merged and other teams have lost players. Worse still Trimpell and Bare, who put out loads of teams have lost their use of pitches at Lancaster & Morecambe College because of other teams using them (I believe the Academy teams but could be wrong). It has been incredibly disruptive.

Additionally, the Service to Youth League http://full-time.thefa.com/ProcessPubli ... e=33836167 has also lost the use of the 3G pitches at the back of The Globe, which were provided at a substantial discount during winter to enable games to take place that would have been lost because of the weather.

There are quite a lot of people moaning but there are upsides as well as downsides.

But if these clubs fold, where do the academy players of the future come from.

Premier League walk over the Football League.
Football League dominate the lower Leagues.

It's just the way things are in the pecking order, great shame hearing the grass roots (below us) are being affected in this way

Posh my comment about drummer was because he has gone against what he preached and only interested in his own gains and this isn't just since the academy started but before and not only my opinion

The Academy and the system is much bigger than Drummy. If he wasn't here it would be someone else and if it wasn't Morecambe's Academy it would be someone else. Teams in the STYL league have lost players to clubs already. Heysham Blue Star I mentioned lost a player to Man City the previous season, we've had one at Everton this week and others have been at PNE, Blackburn and Wigan. The future of a club like Morecambe is an outstanding system for generating young players like Thommo, Perks, Wayne, Danny, Drummy and others we used to find and grow. This does that with or without a Drummy, who is just doing his job and very well. The important thing is for the club to work closely with STYL and its member clubs. Additionally, it should work with them to find pitches, as the situation at LMC isn't fair on a club that's used it for a long time.

+1

This season's under 9's have also lost players resulting in some clubs not being able to field a 2nd team, which is most unfortunate but I would rather have local youngsters be part of a local Academy than them having to travel 20 - 60 miles or more, 2 or 3 times a week to train or play matches.
