Northern Premier League - Best EVER players

Northern Premier League - Best EVER players

Postby Seasider9601 » Mon Oct 09, 2017 12:15 pm

The NPL is 50 years old next year (1968 it was formed) and the link below is asking for supporters to nominate the best EVER players to grace the league.

Surely, from our point of view, votes for Coley, Cainy, Burnsy, Dulla, Robbie, Tommo etc etc should be the norm!

VOTE NOW !!!!!

Our greatest NPL players in my thoughts are the team that won the national cup competition, the
F.A.Trophy in 1974.
John Coates, Dave Pearson, John Bennett, Geoff Street, Bob Baldwin, Jimmy Sutton, Steve Done,
Dave Roberts, Barrie Kershaw, Tony Webber, Malcolm Richmond and Keith Galley.

Lawrie Walsh ??!!!!!

I remember his second spell with us in 1989/90 when Milligan brought him from Fleetwood and he was nothing short of a liability....

Fortunately I'm not old enough to remember his first stint with us in the mid 70's...!!

Somebody will be suggesting the Collins twins Jimmy and Dave next...

Or, how about that famous trio that all played in the first team together Ali, Malley and Galley.

Speaking of Phil Malley, I saw him in Primark in Blackpool the other week.

Loz Walsh was a liability very game, full stop.
Like the suggestion for the helium voiced Collins twins!! Dave Sharples?? As if!

IMO Keith Newton was a great player at the end of his career in a godawful Shrimps team at that time.
We were irredeemably shite for most of the early 80's.
But we still went every week!! :D
Bizarrely happy days, make you appreciate what we have now more!

Havent looked at the list but Leo Skeete of Mossley will be on it and the Moore brothers, non league internationals. Denis Jenas maybe? Yes that's Jermaines dad.

Alty team of mid 70's, John King, Heathcote etc??

All too good for us at the time!!

Do you remember how Lawrie Walsh used to manoeuvre himself round the ball so he could kick it with his left foot ? Don't think he ever used his right foot.

Your right about Leo Skeete of Mossley , a 6 foot plus centre forward who always scored at Christie Park !

The people who are moaning now about losing to Exeter and Crawley would have been on suicide watch in those days !

Was it Eamon O'keefe also from Mossley? Went on to play for the lesser Merseyside team i think! :D Lawrie Walsh was worth the entrance fee alone! Neck like a giraffe and ran around ike bambi on rollerskates! :D We were absolute garbage for many years, but still turned up for the prospect of seeing our side win a corner :D Was it Bob Gauden that Joe Woj wanted to sign, but when he asked him he said no because i score too many goals against your lot!!

Bloody hell, Bob Gauden, big centre forward, like Jenas always scored against us.
Ross was a good player too, bloody Chorley had a good side with him, Edwards, Hughes, Moss, Senior in goal and Gary Buckley and Charlie Pawsey, both later signed for us.

I can't remember that many corners

I remember we got one against Runcorn one Tuesday night, was at the away car park end. We were sat in the main stand on the left and could hardly see who was taking it as half the floodlights didn't work! We scored and won and they were top of the league at the time!! Think at the time they had Barry Whitbread up front a regular scorer in those days, memories eh :D

When dear old Eric got the job, he just dragged half a dozen from Accy, who at the time were the division below with him. Chris Grimshaw, Dave Sharples and Parry amongst them.
I remember a belting little full back we had at the time called Phil Moores I think it was, only little but the best player we had, he was right back.
He dribbled and jinked past two or three and cut inside and unleashed an Exocet from outside the box which crashed against the crossbar, keeper lying on his back waving like an upturned cockroach, it was a tap in from 5 yards, and Steve Parry blasted it over the open terrace into the car park! Kinell, what a plonker. He didn't last long, thankfully.

A couple of years later, in a pre season friendly, it might have been Billy Wright gave him a trial. He lead the team out in front of about fifty people at Crusty Pie, me and Stu were stood at the school end, We saw Parry come out and I moaned "NOT Steve Effin Parry" very loudly and put my head in my hands, he heard me and looked straight at Stu giving him a hard stare.

We didn't sign him!!

Phil Moores broke his leg not long after this and never played for us again, shame, he was a shining light in a team of shite!! :D

Talking about breaking legs - what about the unfortunate Colin Alty ? He broke his twice if I remember ?
Roy Hickton at Macclesfield was a cracking defender in a powerful Macc side - too bloody powerful for us - the dirty s""ds ! He was also the brother of Boro's top striker John Hickton

Voted for John Coleman. Scored something like 250 goals in the NPL and would probably make the top 11 let alone the top 50. Think he went on to score a few more for City too?

Back in the day, Gerry Irving was a class act: he was relatively small and slight for a centre half but he made the game look easy and should have been playing at a much higher level. Recent players: Wayne Curtis without a doubt and Danny Carlton of course. But I voted for the best footballer I have ever seen in non-League football, let alone in a Morecambe shirt: the late, great Charlie Lea. He'll go down in history; scores more goals than Summerbee; Cha Cha Cha Cha Charlie Lea!
