Where are the goals going to come from?

People forget how Podge was used when he was here. He never played 5 or 6 games in a row upfront and spent most of his time stuck on the wing. People say he was never fast enough etc but he was and has proven it since, a natural goal scorer. Dismissing his goal record in the Conference is crazy. We don't have a striker who would get 10 goals never mind 30+ in the Conference.

I notice the people scoffing at Podge's record of 35 goals in one season in the conference don't mention Oliver's record. Between 2015-17 in both league 2 and the Conference he scored 14 goals for York.

I always thought that his attitude and work rate were first class as well. Compare that to the labouring Oliver and I would have Podge every day of the week.

When Podge was let go we still had Jack Redshaw and with the wages freed up from Podges departure we brought in Tom Barkhuizen. No one in their right mind would have chosen Podge over either of these two players back then.

With the state of our striking options now I'd have Podge back in this current team but that doesn't mean I'd have wanted us to keep him around the club for the past 3 years at the expense of some other players.

Yes , Redshaw left later in the Summer just after we let Podge go. When Jim let Podge go he probably thought we could hold onto Redshaw.

Its water under the bridge now but its hard to see anyone on the staff at present scoring 10 goals or more this season (with the possible exception of Kevin).

Podge was released, Redshaw was sold for 175K, Barkhuizen for 150K, so hindsight is a wonderful thing as we sacrificed Podge to keep Redshaw and sign Barkhuizen. We may not even be here now without that money knowing what we know now.

I liked Podge, but at the time, it was the right decision.

Bringing it up now as a mistake, in my opinion, is just using it as another stick to beat the management with.

Yes , Redshaw left later in the Summer just after we let Podge go. When Jim let Podge go he probably thought we could hold onto Redshaw.

And even when Redshaw went he was replaced with Shaun Miller who got 16 goals that season. Would Podge have scored that many? Probably not.

In the first half against Grimsby, with the Shrimps kicking towards the Omega, I was particularly watching Oliver, and what I observed was not good.
He was too static, just standing next to his marker, offering no movement off the ball.
He doesn't seem to look for or be aware of space behind or to the side of defenders, which I would have
thought is a basic attribute for any striker.
When Morecambe get a free kick outside the box and the players were waiting for the delivery, he had his hands on his hips like he was waiting in a station for the next train.
The ones who were looking interested in the free kick were Old and Winnard, up from the back. They were moving around looking for space and position to maybe get on the end of the delivery.
When the kick was taken, Oliver did about three steps forward with his marker in close attendance, and then when it came to nothing, just ambled back up the pitch.
When the glorious chance came for him to score, he was,for once, in the right place at the right time.........and blew it.
I do hope he proves me wrong, and scores and provides goals in the future, but I don't see it happening.

McGurk has goals in him but he is playing 3 different roles in the game. He should be playing on the last man, a genuine goal threat.

Instead of paying money on a new striker, why not hire a specialist coach instead? There must be a recently retired striker doung his badges and wanting some experience out there somewhere.

I can see the point what people are trying to make.

ie. if we're was to get a proven striker who can score 20+ goals a season would he score them for us? with Jim's favoured playing style?

Olivier like other forwards before him we far to often see getting isolated, and so would anyone else new brought in, it's getting the right shape and system what players are happy with.

Let's not get carried away. Adam McGurk's best return is 12 goals in a season in 2013/14 and he's barely scored since.

I don't believe we have enough fire power in our current squad. Vadaine Oliver is not a finisher nor is Rhys Turner. Posh's data shows McGurk will get goals and so will Thommo and Kevin but will that be enough? I believe the board will have to find some money from somewhere to sign a striker in the transfer window otherwise our goal return will continue to cause us problems.

Harry Kane would only get 10 goals a season and a stiff neck watching the ball fly over his head playing in our team. The number 9 is not the issue.

Amond's scoring rate hasn't been that different since he left us. It's unfair to compare his record at Grimsby as that was at a lower level (same for Burrow).

Amond's goal scoring record at League 2 is as follows:

11/12 (Accrington) - 8
12/13 (Accrington) - 9
13/14 (Morecambe) - 11
14/15 (Morecambe) - 10
16/17 (Hartlepool) - 14
17/18 (Newport) - 6

I find the fascination with Podge quite bizarre. Yes, there's an argument that he was slightly underused and played out of position with us but the idea that he's anything more than a 10-15 goal a season striker for a bottom half of League 2 team has absolutely no basis in fact.

He's probably better than what we have now but we've always had better options up front before this one (Stockton, Miller, Redshaw).

We ain't going to keep a clean sheet on Saturday in my opinion and I feel that although a draw is just keeping our heads above the precipice, we really need to try and win this one which means scoring 2 goals or more, something we rarely do nowadays.

Forest Green have had 2 good wins on the trot, so this isn't going to be easy.
