Poor home gates.....

Postby Christies Child » Mon Jan 22, 2018 10:07 pm

.....and we think we have a problem.

Accy Stanley could only manage 1217 home fans last time out v Port Vale who took circa 500 of their own fans to the game.

Stanley's fans like us are perplexed at knowing what to do about increasing their gates especially as they are close to a promotion spot.

Seems as though we both suffer from more attractive games in relative close proximity.

On Saturday Southport in Conference North had over 1,600 although Stockport County will have taken a decent following.

In that game Jack Sampson scored 2 and Rhys Turner scored 1.

There's you reason.

What is the population of the whole area , Lancaster , Carnforth , Morecambe etc , that is what we should be targeting. Until the ownership is settled nobody seems to be steering the ship.

Indeed, I've said this before. We need to be marketing the club as the area's league club and spread our wings outside the town of Morecambe itself. Do the community section go around the primary schools in Carnforth giving out the free tickets - they've never been to my son's school - or do they just keep going to the same schools in Morecambe, doing the same thing year after year and expecting different outcomes? Perhaps the club's name should be changed to "Morecambe Bay" to try to engage the wider community. Personally, I think Lancaster is a lost cause - they have their own team and there is generally no love lost between the Lancaster and Morecambe people generally - I think we need to be working on Heysham, Carnforth and up the coastal strip. I work with lots of Morecambe businesses and look at their customer databases - it's striking that most have few customers from Lancaster and the South, yet they tend to have an unexpectedly high number of customers from the Kendal and South Lakes area. As a club, we should be tapping into that market.

There is a statistics page in The Times football section (I picked up a free copy at the airport).

The lowest home average home attendances are dominated by historically non-League clubs.

85 Fleetwood Town 3,211
86 Yeovil 2,915
87 FGR 2,676 (that will fall)
88 Stevenage 2,433
89 Barnet 2,133
90 Crawley 2,058
91 Stanley 1,668
92 Morecambe 1,443

1.443 is equal to Dagenham who are ranked 18th in the attendances for the National League.

I don't think people wonder why we can't spend money. Most people are acutely aware of the club's financial situation.

I think people do wonder what happened to the promises of the "non football" income streams on which the Sainsbury's money was spent, i.e. gym, 3g pitches, function rooms, etc. "Investing" on those areas was supposed to mean the cash was generated to support the football side of things. Just hasn't happened.

Being blunt, it feels like the club are leaving it to the trust to drum up support. Club news is very limited to matches & players, for example where's the club report on players visiting the hospital? Saw them going in myself so it certainly happened.

I thought I read somewhere that the club had a new general manager? Do they?

Maybe it's also about time, now PMG is no longer the person with control, that all the directors are allowed to speak openly. Or is it just a massive coincidence that some haven't posted since the day they signed on the dotted line?

Lancaster have their own team, although Carnforth is a target area.

PS. If I was Lancaster born n bread I'd be supporting them, just like most of us would our home team.

The "Club" need to realise it is not easy to be a fan in these difficult times (and they will probably say it is not easy to be a Director either) .

As a 'recognised' fan, (there are plenty of us) people ask you day in, day out what is going on, I'm sure I'm not the only one. Question after question, just no answers  ..

Come on Morecambe :D

How many possible attendee's do we think go to watch prem clubs live at their grounds, and how can we persuade them to watch the home team instead ?

Going by past comments on here there appears to be little or no bus service near The Globe. If a coach service from Heysham, Bare and Torrisholme is out of the question could not some form of car sharing service be set up? Can't imagine that many football league teams have no bus service to their grounds. I know Argyle have a much bigger following than us but they have several coaches come in from Cornwall.

Last season as part of the Sad Arse Group I did suggest making use of the clubs mini bus to start picking up fans from Overton and then onto Heysham etc.

This proved impractical but a fan did offer the use of his mini bus but it appears to have fallen by the way side which is unfortunate to say the least.

I said at the time that I suspected that a number of fans in those areas had difficulty in getting to The Globe but the car sharing scheme sounds like a good way to get over this problem.

I'm more than willing to pick up 4 fans from the Milnthorpe area if approached.

Success on the pitch is the only thing that will bring people through the turnstiles.
People have far to many options, not just football related, so why would they pay good money to stand in the cold watching us get beat "there words not mine". I wish I had a pound for every time someone comments on us losing again, but none of them realise the quality of some of the performances this season.
See you Saturday

If they are commenting on us losing again they must still have an interest in the club to be looking at the results. The only way they are going to realise that there are some quality performances is for some of them to be there and I think there is some milage in the car sharing from various areas around Morecambe. In order for it to be given a chance of being the least bit effective it needs to be organised. If I lived up there I'd give it a go but 300+ miles away is a little bit too far  It's got to be worth a try. If it can bring in 50 more those 50 might help pass the word of quality performances.

Many on here decry CC but at least he says he's prepared to try car sharing. Something for the Trust to look at?

The style of football (do we even have one) is the main problem people won't give up their time and money to stand and watch a hoof fest every week. Once or twice you might get away with it but when they realise that it's always the same they give up.

I went to.bolton v Ipswich Saturday adult ticket 20 quid that's cheaper than the cheapest seat on the PMG. In the family section they had stuff to keep the kids interested before the game and even a little five a side game on the concourse ( couldn't the community guys organise a little kick about at the front of the Globe).

The game was pretty poor but the interesting thing was it didn't matter how scrappy it got both teams never panicked and hoofed. The keeper always rolled it out and if nothing was on the back 4 passed it between themselves to keep possession and waited. I'm guessing at that level they realise if u hoof it it's just going to give possession away and put more pressure on u something which we don't seem to get.

I am not saying that results and style of play don't have a major influence on gates. Of course they do.
But whether we like it or not if everyone sits back and says there's nothing we the fans can do to help it's all down to the management and players if there is a wealthy business man who loves football out there....and I do say IF....will he be interested in a club whose fans do not try to help in all possible ways when the club is facing relegation and a lot worse?

What is there to lose by trying car sharing as a start. Get some willing drivers together from different areas, select a home game either where vital points can be won or against one of the top teams. Get some advertising out there with articles in the press and local radio that car sharing might be available in their area and then it's up to Jim and the team to provide some good entertainment.

Ok, tell me that it's easy for me to talk, miles away from the action but I still care about my Team as much as you all do and I don't want us to crash out of the league into bankruptcy without every angle being tried.

Tell me to shut up and I will.

I managed to hijack a Blackpool fan a couple of years ago, now he brings his girlfriend and one of his mates and they are all season ticket holders! They actually enjoy the matchday experiences despite the defeats! If even a few locals could entice a friend or mate down it could only help the cause. :)

Yes, but if you include the towns around Accrington & Southport, their populations will be far higher too! You can't selectively choose to use surrounding towns for Morecambe but not for the comparable towns.

I think the Morecambe fans have proved their support in various different ways over recent years. Attendances increased when we couldn't pay the wages last year. The fans paid Jim's fine. The fans have rallied around! The fact that we still have over 1,000 regular fans given the hoofball and poor home form over several years must stand for something.

I think the bigger problem is lack of engagement by the Board who continue to just see the fans as pound signs, rather than people who may have ideas and who's goodwill and enthusiasm they could tap into. Even now, simple/cheap changes suggested by fans are still being ignored, communication is still poor.

Westgate wanderer makes the only fresh and positive contribution here, the rest is recycled guff.

The directors have nothing to tell us as we don't have an active owner in possession of loads of shares and money, anyone who doesn't realise this must have been in jail for 2 years.
