O/T Road potholes

This lunchtimes BBC News highlighted the on going and increasing problem of road potholes, something that all drivers will be familiar with.

Maybe they should have reported on the absolute shambles of a road that drivers have to negotiate in Carnforth and more recently the A6 connection to the M6 at Junction 35.

The Carnforth shambles has been like that for well over 12 months if not longer whilst the M6 connection is getting worse on a daily basis.

Wonder how long it will be before a few motorists have major suspension problems and possible accidents at both locations.

Not sure if it's a County Council issue or the local Council to fix but whoever it is need to get their acts into gear and get the problems sorted.

I know a lot of local Aurtorities have had their Budgets slashed(I use to work for LCC) but a lot of them were getting more than enough anyway, and some departments won't even try and make ends meet.

You'll still for example get a Council Inspecter drive all the way up to Silverdale, see a dead fox and instead of bagging it up and putting it in his Van, instead radio through to White Lund Depot , only for them to send another Van up with 2 men in it to clean it up on double time.

Then give it, well don't blame us for our services, blame the Goverment.

How many times do you see Departments saying our budget this year, we've thousands left, here have some back or should we save it for next year?

There's the pothles and the other issue that I've noticed is lack of maintenance of zebra crossings. The best example locally is the one at Torrisholme. Yes there's belisha beacons but there is hardly any paint on the road to indicate its a zebra crossing ! It will, if it hasn't already , reach a point where it compromises road safety.
A lot of kids / elderly use that crossing , local knowledge means most people know its a zebra crossing but I've seen drivers go right through when there's been pedestrians waiting to cross.

Maybe I'm turning in to an old fart and I'll start writing in to newspapers about dog shit on the pavements next ?

A lot of kids / elderly use that crossing , local knowledge means most people know its a zebra crossing but I've seen drivers go right through when there's been pedestrians waiting to cross.

Perfectly legal. A driver does not have to stop for someone waiting at a Zebra crossing.

It's arguable. The Highway Code (which is a legally enforceable code of practice) says you should stop for pedestrians. I know someone who drove through Kendal ignoring the zebra crossings, and after the third a police car pulled him over and warned him.

Motorways and trunk roads are Highways Agency, which would cover the link up to the M6.

My driving instructor 26 years ago taught me that pedestrians only have priority when they step foot onto the crossing. Until then, drivers may drive past at their discretion.

Zebra crossings. As you approach a zebra crossing

- look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross
- you MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing
- allow more time for stopping on wet or icy roads
- do not wave or use your horn to invite pedestrians across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching
- be aware of pedestrians approaching from the side of the crossing.

Little different to the Shrimp roundabout discussions, various ways of interpreting the rules. To me, if you've got to stop when a pedestrian moves onto the crossing, you should stop anyway because you'd be in the wrong if you decided not to stop and they stepped out as you're a few feet away.

It's all about the "MUST". That means it's a legal requirement, whereas "should" or similar is just advisory.

My point was a fairly minor observation ; that because the paint has faded away on the actual 'zebra crossing' its difficult to know whether,especially if your not familiar with the area, there's a crossing there or not.
The roads are not maintained; they've become neglected.
I can't think why I wouldn't stop at a zebra crossing if somebody was waiting to cross though ?
Although those at the Morrissons supermarket over to the Festival Market are a pain in the arse if there's a lot of folk wanting to cross. Stop- start there at busy times.

Exactly. It is how I know the rule as on my driving test back in 2006 I never stopped and the examiner said it was okay but I was lucky the pedestrian hadn't stepped on. I always stop at Zebras though as it's the fair thing to do.

On Border TV News last week there was a feature of Cumbria Highways filling in potholes in Carlisle. The foreman said that it is a problem if water gets underneath the tarmac. The TV then proceeded to show the "roadies" shovelling tarmac into holes full of rain water!! Of course the dumb reporter didn't ask the obvious! The mind boggles!

By the way, coming back from Luton last week I noticed some serious potholes on the M6 around Wigan. Amazed that there hasn't been a major accident as hitting one of them at 70 mph could be catastrophic.
