Player Of The Year voting

Player Of The Year voting

Postby outsider » Sat Mar 31, 2018 2:11 pm

The season's POTY voting will take place on April 14th Carlisle game. Hopefully weather permitting I'll have a box and table outside JBs. I will also try to get boxes on the carwash, under the cheap seats on main stand. On widow sill outside the Local Choice suit and behind The home end.

This is for all supporters to vote in.

For me there has been no outstanding player head and shoulders above others so it will be an interesting result with nobody (in my opinion) a clear favourite.

Others may disagree.

For me it could be between Ellison, Lavelle, Old, Roche, McGowan, Rose and Lang.

There has for me, possibly as I'm luck to see many away games, Lavelle, Old or McGowan week in and out have all been generally superb.
Young Sam ha s grabbed his chance and shown immense maturity, AJ has grown up and is very hard to beat as a full back, and Old has provided an old head but also a threat from corners, which has been a boost.
Nobody else for me has matched those three consistently.

Anybody else think that the number of gongs dished out at the POTS awards needs to be drastically reduced? Many of the awards are for the same thing, voted for by the same people with different hats on. The night goes on for too long as it is IMO, especially when Drummond gets hold of the microphone ;) .

I don’t see the benefits of sections of the press/media and fans groups issuing their own awards - which usually end up being the same few individuals anyway. It’s actually quite divisive IMO; I’d be all for scrapping the duplication to have one supporters player of the season as selected by all fans. Let’s be honest - the players only really seem to value the award that has been selected by their peers anyway.

Also - I’d personally like to see a supporter of the year award as selected by fellow fans. I think this award existed previously - but has since evolved into the club person of the year award which can cover a number of things. To my mind, these can be separate awards.

For what it’s worth, I think Levelle will scoop all and sundry on the night. Old has pushed him close, but of the two Sam has been slightly more consistent and has grown into a vital cog in what has been a shrewd defence - 48 goals conceded so far from 39 games. The lowest we have achieved since being a FL club is 52 (2014-15) whilst last season we conceded 73.... so despite the departure of our best player last summer (Ryan Edwards), we have improved in this area.

My only issue with voting for Lavelle is he didn’t really feature in the first team until November, that’s the first 3 months of the season where he wasn’t in the team. If we started the voting from November onwards then he would win it hands down.

In League 2 games that Sam Lavelle has appeared in we’ve conceded 23 goals in 21 games.

I think it’s certainly between him, AJ and Old though.

AJ player of the season for me. Very consistent all season and he’s now fully made the transition from being a promising young prospect to one of our best first team players.

I would add Baz to those 3 as nominees. He has been outstanding.

Back to Lavelle , we will be lucky if we can hold onto him. Hopefully they will offer him a better contract so that we will receive something in compensation if he moves on.

There's probably a few that we will be lucky to hold onto.

Exactly. Anyone under 23 that we don't want to lose should be offered a better contract to prevent us losing them with no compensation. Not sure who has a contract for next season other than Adam Campbell and Wildig.

I'm very worried that Sam will be whisked away to a club able to offer better terms.

We MUST move heaven and earth to retain our younger players like Sam unless we will be going through the same ritual season after season. Unfortunately I doubt that we will be able to do so.....unless the ownership problem is resolved ASAP which hopefully would give our manager more cash to offer.

Didn't realise Sam had only played 23 games - seems like he's been there all season. Fair point about the number of games.

Think there's general consensus is that its between the three you mentioned. AJ has had a more consistent season than previous years - but, perhaps understandably, it has included a few stinkers (Barnet away and Exeter at home immediately spring to mind). Overall though, great progression. If you think about it, we bought in Lund on loan to compete for his position (maybe even as the starter), but he has made it his own.
