Midfield against Coventry

We are obviously facing one of the biggest games in the club's history on Saturday and need to offer a goal threat that has been absent for many of the games lately. In my opinion, the problem starts with midfield not retaining possession and feeding the strikers with a decent service. For me Michael Rose looks a shadow of the player we had last season and there are large gaps in midfield. I would find places for Wildig and Fleming to liven up the middle of the pitch and leave Rose on the bench. I would also look at starting Wilde out wide supporting Lang and Kevin Ellison(?). Hopefully with a better supply of ball these forwards can threaten and even do something missing from the last three games and SCORE. I don't want us to stack the side with defenders looking to frustrate Coventry and prevent them from scoring. That tactic doesn't work and invites enormous pressure on the defence. We have to attack and if we managed to score the first goal we would give ourselves a fighting chance of the point we require.COYS

Fleming and Wildig have to start for me. Wildig making his late runs into the box like against Carlisle and Lincoln. He is contracted for next season so has a real incentive to do the business.

I would play Kenyon ahead of Rose.

For me, Flemo does a great job nicking the ball and starting attacks and is a better passer than many, so he can still defend but has a good engine. So he's a must start. Alex is brill at winning the ball back too, but perhaps the simple pass is needed from him. Wylde, Lang, McGurk (despite his frustrating touches last week) and WIldig can all play a bit too, and the Ricoh pitch is like a carpet.

Seriously, if we approach this like Barnet did last Saturday, first to the ball, first to the bounce, quick passing, a point is possible.
If we sit back and invite them on, we are buggered.

A more recent example would be last Tuesday's match involving Yeovil and FGR. Both teams needed a draw to confirm their safety and they just happened to play out a 0-0 draw with just 3 shots on target all match.

I think we need one of Kenyon and Rose, depending on the opposition. If we're facing big, imposing and strong attackers then put Kenyon in for his determination and good heading ability. His tackling is reckless and poor though, so if we're facing nippy more technical attackers then I'd put Rose in as he times his tackles miles better.

Have to put Fleming in and if Jim doesn't then I'd give him the bloody sack as soon the team is announced! I would like to have seen more of Wildig this season but if we're playing 4-2-3-1, I find him less effective in a deeper role than Fleming and he can get a bit overwhelmed defensively. I think Wildig works better further forward in a No10 kind of area. We would be wise to make use of Wylde on Coventry's bigger and nicer pitch, his direct running style should be very effective.

Not that my opinion counts for much but for me both Wildig and Fleming have to start.

Fleming played very well v Carlisle but for some reason didn't even feature at any time on Saturday.

I agree with Freez...we can do this given the right team selection and tactics. We can't sit back and defend. We have to go for it like we did at Wycombe. If we did it once we can do it again.

I'd rather we went out of the league having given it 110% rather than just sit back and played like we'd already accepted our fate.

What's gone before is history.

Saturday is the teams chance to show that nobody in the match day squad wants to have relegation on their CV.

What should happen:
1. Pick your best eleven
2. Pick a formula to play to their strengths
3. Let the opposition worry about your best players playing in their best positions

What will happen:
1. Analyse the opposition and try to guess what they will do
2. Pick a system you think will negate the strengths of the opposition style and/or players
3. Wedge your players into the chosen system regardless of their best positions and abilities

Biggest issue of the formations we play - 30yrds between defensive midfielders and attackers
Biggest losers this season - Fleming, Wildig and Campbell who would usually play in those areas

I think Germany had to win by 1 or 2 goals so they both qualified and knocked Algeria out. They scored after 10 minutes then they both dallied about.

Shrimpy's line up looks good to me. I shudder at the thought of Oliver having any part to play. He doesn't dig in and show fight. He looks disinterested most of the time.
